Bleeding vines

Aqua Vitis or Lachryma Vitias was the old name given to bleeding vines. When the vines' sap is rising, it tells us average wine field-walkers that winter is over and the new biological life cycle has begun. At the points, where the vines have been trimmed, drops start to form - looking like water. This liquid is to help the cutting-wounds of the vine to heal, to disinfect and finally help to close it again, before bacteria can get in. 30 ingredients are found in the 'tears' and already the Romans used them for health purposes, so did Hildegard von Bingen... Even today, cremes can be found with vine sap as key ingredient. However, I am looking forward to the drops way further into the cycle.

Cheers,
Heike
