Kalmar to build four ship-to-shore cranes for new Vuosaari Port in Finland

Kalmar has secured an order from Finnsteve Oy Ab for four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to be used at the new Vuosaari Port in Finland. The cranes will be capable of servicing post-Panamax vessels in twin-lift operation, while preparations will be made for future tandem-lift operation. The cranes will be up and running by November 2008. Vuosaari in Helsinki, Finland will be one of the most modern ports in the Baltic Sea when completed in 2009. The operating activities of the two existing smaller Helsinki ports will be moved there at the end of 2008. By this time, traffic channels will be ready, along with most of the business park. Finnsteve specialises in the handling of unitised cargo (containers, trucks and trailers) at the Ports of Helsinki, Kotka and Turku. Activities include stevedoring for scheduled liner traffic, the operation of cargo and service terminals, container depot and repairs, and customs clearance. Kalmar’s reputation for building reliable cranes is gaining ground across Europe. Recent orders include one STS crane for the Port of Oslo’s new Sjursøya Container Terminal, which will begin to operate at the end of next year; two super post-Panamax STS cranes for MSC Home Terminal in Antwerp, on top of the 15 cranes already delivered to the terminal in 2004; and one Panamax STS container crane for Sweden’s Helsingborgs Hamn AB, which will be the second largest crane working in Swedish ports. Deliveries are scheduled for 2007. Rene Kleiss, VP Container Cranes for Kalmar, says: “The quality of Kalmar’s cranes combined with our reputation for delivering quickly and within agreed time frames has lead to significant growth for Kalmar ship-to-shore-cranes.” The characteristics of the STS cranes ordered from Finnsteve are: Lifting capacity on the ropes 82 tons (twin-lift operation) Lifting capacity on the ropes 100 tons (tandem-lift operation) Outreach 46 metres Rail gauge 30.48 metres Backreach 20 metres Hoisting height above rail 36 metres Hoisting depth below rail 13.5 metres Hoisting speed 75 metres/minute with 82 tons on the ropes 150 metres/minute with 27 tons on the ropes Trolley travelling speed 210 metres / minute Gantry travelling speed 45 metres / minute -ends- Notes to editor: Press information can be found on Kalmar’s website: www.kalmarind.com.
