US Corporate Giants are recognized in Top Responsible Supply Chain List

With, what some would call a, a green-wash of supply chain management underway it has become very popular to be profiled as a company bearing a responsible supply chain.

Procurement and sourcing are two elements of supply chain management that heavily dictate the outcome of how ‘green’ a supply chain’s activities are. This is largely in part to the strategic decisions made within the procurement function, selecting, assessing, evaluating, governing and developing suppliers' activities.

The reports name: The Closing the Gap: Scaling Up Sustainable Supply Chain Practices, and it was published by CDP.

Amongst the companies listed in CDP's report were US giants such as Apple, Microsoft and Bank of America. In fact, “among 58 corporate giants recognized as the world’s greenest buyers, 32% of which are US companies, the research shows” (Hermes 2018).

Dedication and rededication to sustainability initiatives in supply chain management - especially procurement -  is a hopeful indication of a shifting mindset within businesses globally. And while doing good, many companies were able to line their pockets with extra capital. A total of $14B was collectively saved by the 58 companies listed in CDP’s report, from reduction of carbon emissions.

Other findings entailed that GHG emissions are more impactful within supply chain operations than believed, there is an increasing number of companies reducing emissions and “actionable and quantifiable emissions reduction targets are a reality” (Hermes 2018).

This report displays a step in the right direction for many global companies and their suppliers, as well.

But, it also highlights the importance of setting goals and targets for driving social and environmental change. Supply chain sustainability isn’t going to happen on its own. It requires businesses ready to get their hands dirty and work towards a common goal.
