Light My Fire of Sweden introduces BORROW Program aimed at changing consumer behavior and ending single-use plastic.

[Malmö, March 27th] - Light My Fire of Sweden is proud to announce its revolutionary BORROW Program, created to eliminate single-use tableware. Light My Fire invests in and develops regenerative business models and innovative solutions that promote responsible material usage.

The BORROW Program consists of reusable plates, glasses, cups and cutlery; a mobile Wash Station, Return Stations for easy collection, bikes to distribute and return the tableware, and a composter that turns food into fertilizer in just 24 hours.

Designed to meet the needs of event, stadium and arena organizers; municipalities, schools, universities and businesses, customers have several options to choose from, depending on their needs. Choices range from daily rentals for events to long-term leasing or purchasing. There are four main categories of BORROW; each one is designed to suit any needs and all products have been event-tested:

Everyday Solutions for cafes, restaurants, schools, workplaces, universities and trip organizers.

Event Essentials, which are ideal for stadiums, festivals, caterers and other events.

Custom Engagements, designed for amusement parks, water parks, parks, trip organizers, guides, outdoor concessions and similar venues, where tailored solutions are often a necessity.

Modular Add-Ons like dishwashers, reurn stations, distribution bikes, on-site composting and Pledge Tokens —tools crafted to streamline the return process.

The BORROW Program sprung from a research project called RETAKE, which included pilot initiatives at the Gothenburg Horse Show in Scandinavium in February 2023, and Almedalen Week held in Visby in June 2023.

Calill Odqvist Jagusch, owner and CEO of Light My Fire, highlights the benefits of the BORROW Program: “This is a modular service solution that eliminates waste and reduces a company’s carbon footprint.”

The durable tableware is designed specifically for events and can be used at least 400 times.

“When the products are used up, they are returned to us, and we grind down the plastic and manufacture new ones,” says Odqvist Jagusch. “This saves large amounts of disposable products while at the same time making maximum use of the material. This can then be repeated at least 10 times, which means that the material can be used approximately 4,000 times.”

Once a customer determines the tableware is at its “end of use”, they can return it for recycling, reducing the products’ carbon footprint. If the customer re-buys the products, they receive a 25% material discount.

In 2017, Light My Fire embarked on a mission to grow its business while minimizing the introduction of new virgin-material products into the market. Recognizing the urgent need to address plastic waste, the company sought ways to repurpose its existing product line and promote the responsible use of plastic.

“Back in 2017, we questioned how we could contribute to the regenerative economy without further exacerbating the plastic waste crisis,” says Odqvist Jagusch. “We firmly believe that reusable, recyclable plastic holds the key to resolving these challenges and transforming our approach to plastic consumption.”

The global efforts to combat plastic waste have gained significant momentum in recent years. Sweden, where Light My Fire is headquartered, has been at the forefront of incentivizing change and implementing measures to reduce single-use plastic. Light My Fire has taken an active role in this movement, developing comprehensive solutions to replace single-use plastics in various settings across the country.

Through years of research, testing, and collaboration with like-minded businesses and government programs, Light My Fire has pioneered innovative initiatives to drive behavioral change and reduce plastic waste. These efforts encompass a range of solutions tailored to different industries and contexts, including takeaway containers, reusable lunchbox containers, and rental programs for events and festivals.
