EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2022, nominates Kunskapshuset (House of Knowledge)

Thursday 9thof September, The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe announced the second list of 85 works competing for the 2022 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award. These works join the previous group of nominees announced on 2 February. Altogether, 532 works completed between October 2018 and April 2021 in 41 countries are selected as nominees, and Kunskapshuset is one of them.

Gällivare, located north of the Arctic circle, is a city undergoing a unique transformation. Two centres will merge when neighbouring area Malmberget is relocated in to Gällivare as a result of mining development. Through dialogues with citizens and contact with the local business sector and other stakeholders, the municipality has established a vision to build a “world-class Arctic town”. Liljewall, in collaboration with MAF Arkitektkontor, has contributed this vision through the creation of Kunskapshuset, which will house the municipality’s upper secondary school and adult education centres.

Initiated in 1987, after an agreement between the European Parliament and the Barcelona City Council, the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award has been organised by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and the European Commission since 2001.The Prize is awarded biennially to works completed within the previous two years and exceptionally, this time, 2,5 years. The principal objectives are to achieve a thorough understanding of the transformation of Europe’s built environment; to recognize and commend excellence and innovation in the field of architecture; and to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new ideas with the undeniable support of clients and the involvement of those who will become the users of these places.

The Emerging Winner is distinguished by a combination of qualities such as excellence and authenticity of design; a genuine and innovative character of its work; and high-standard, well executed, and sustainable construction.

We are both happy and proud that Kunskapshuset is receiving international attention. The project is a result of a successful collaboration with Gällivare municipality and our hope is for Kunskapshuset to maintain its substantial role in the future development of Gällivare, says Harald Gamrell, Lead Architect at Liljewall.

The 40 shortlisted projects will be announced in January 2022, and the winners will be announced in April 2022.
