Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado visits Malmö
On 11 June, Malmö will receive a visit from the Japanese Imperial Family as Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado visits the city.
During her visit, Princess Takamado will, among other engagements, visit the World Maritime University. In the evening, the City of Malmö will host a dinner at City Hall in honour of the Princess, attended by invited guests from business, culture and academia.
– We look forward to welcoming Princess Takamado to Malmö and to further strengthening the relations between Malmö and Japan, says Carina Nilsson, President of City council, who will host the visit.
For several years, Malmö has developed its ties with Japan. The collaboration is based on shared interests in innovation, sustainable development and growth. The EU–Japan Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in 2019, has also created new opportunities for exchange and trade. Japan is currently the world’s fourth-largest economy.
Japan Bridge Scandinavia was established in 2021 and brings together companies, organisations, universities and municipalities with a focus on strengthening collaboration and business development with Japan.
In 2024, the Japan Business and Innovation Hub was established at Minc in Malmö. The initiative aims to support companies from Malmö seeking to establish or expand business in Japan, as well as Japanese companies looking to operate in Malmö and southern Sweden.
Since 2023, the City of Malmö has also been a member of the Global City Network for Sustainability (G-NETS). The network is led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and focuses on developing solutions to global sustainability challenges through innovation and collaboration, including with startups.
