Record order for Mared to forestry Group Södra: Grows and hires new staff
Engineering firm J. Mared in Huskvarna supplies a complete plant to Södra for processing by-products.
“This is an extremely fun and complex project, actually the largest in the company’s 55 year history,” says Thomas Magnusson, Operating CEO at Mared.
Södra’s largest industrial site is located in Värö, outside of Varberg. The site houses one of the world’s largest pulp factories, which produces 800,000 tonnes of pulp annually and Scandinavia’s largest sawmill with a capacity of 600,000 cubic metres of sawn timber. Soon a new factory for cross-laminated timber (CLT) will be put into operation and this is where Mared plays a role.
“We have been tasked with and confidence has been placed in us to design, deliver, install and put a complete plant into production for handling by-products, which includes complex automation and transport solution,” explains Thomas Magnusson.
The plant will include sorting and transporting outcuts of wooden blocks for further processing, in addition to chipping and handling wood shavings and sawdust. The project includes nearly 1 km of conveyor technology, in addition to a hammer-mill, shredder equipment, storage silos, saws and palleting for handling outcuts, safety system, automation technology and control systems. Small fragments as well as wood shavings and sawdust will also be used as fuel at the pulp factory and its lime kiln.
Mared takes full responsibility for designing and building the plant and will also be responsible for aftermarket. Delivery will take place in close collaboration with one of the sister companies in the Mared Group, Elf Automation in Tidaholm, which will provide saw and automation engineering for the handling of outcuts.
Södra and Mared have a longstanding history in collaborating on various projects and according to Urban Blomster, who is Market and Project Manager at Södra Building, this provides a sense of security,
“Mared has been skilled in developing a turnkey solution for this project and is an engineering firm with the experience required to design the customised solutions we need. It is also of value that they will be with us both while ramping up to full operation and during future maintenance.”
For Södra, the project is also an important step in sustainability work.
“Our ambition is to provide part of the fuel required, which we currently solve with other by-products. You could say that there is an internal exchange of volumes for power production,” explains Urban Blomster.
The plant will be fully taken over and approved at the end of 2023. “For engineering firm J. Mared, Södra’s confidence in the company resulted in an opportunity for continued growth,” says Thomas Magnusson.
“We will hire new employees to ensure that Södra, our existing and new customers can receive smart turnkey solutions and good service that allows them to focus on their core business. For engineers and technicians who want to work with sustainability related issues in an innovative industry, this is a fantastic opportunity. We not only specialise on recycling wood and biomass, but also work with many materials, from electronics to different types of building and industrial waste.”
