Nordbex, Bergen Engines and Cortus Energy achieves record breaking efficiency for power generation with biogenic syngas
Stockholm, Sweden - June 20, 2024 – Nordbex is proud to announce a groundbreaking achievement in the field of renewable energy, verifying a record-breaking efficiency for power generation using biogenic syngas. The Nordbex solution is developed for optimised power generation with integrated carbon dioxide removal where the key is process efficiency. The remarkable level of 45% efficiency was reached in a production test conducted on 13th-14th of June , 2024, in Bergen, Norway. This historic milestone was achieved in close cooperation with key technology partners Bergen Engines and Cortus Energy.
Revolutionary solution for carbon negative power generation (BECCS)
Nordbex’s innovative solution is unique for being optimised to provide valuable baseload electricity and substantial carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere, positioning Nordbex at the forefront of sustainable power solutions. One key aspect is to achieve a very high process efficiency from biomass (forestry waste) to power and subsequent carbon dioxide removal. The high efficiency from Cortus Energy’s biomass to syngas technology and the high efficiency carbon removal process of Aker Carbon Capture is already known and this test result verifies the core process for power generation.
Record-breaking efficiency
The test, performed at 45% engine load, showcased an unprecedented efficiency level for power generation using biogenic syngas. Achieving over 40% efficiency with this type of gas composition, at such low engine loads, has not been done before. The result is in line with the high expectation set by Nordbex, but more importantly indicates that the solution can break new records, highlighting the advanced capabilities and the synergistic performance of Bergen Engines and Cortus Energy’s syngas. Efficiency at full load is targeted to exceed even the world record for natural gas powered engines at 51%.
Integrated net power generation and carbon dioxide removal
Nordbex’s carbon negative power solution can deliver up to 140 GWh of baseload electricity annually, making it an ideal alternative for powering a small to medium sized city. In addition to adding new valuable energy output, the system is capable of removing up to 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year, significantly contributing to reaching local, national, and global targets to mitigate climate change.
“This achievement is a major milestone for Nordbex, and it proves the strength in our competitive power solution and underscores our commitment to address the urgent need for efficient carbon reduction” said Thomas Öström, CEO at Nordbex.
”We have had high expectations on this process but this result is far above expectation. This would not have been possible without the close cooperation and commitment from our technology partners at Bergen Engines and Cortus Energy” said Håkan Karlsson, CTO of Nordbex

About Bergen Engines
Bergen Engines AS, based in Norway, is a prominent manufacturer of medium-speed liquid and gas-fueled reciprocating engines. Known for its robust and reliable engines, Bergen Engines caters to both marine and land-based applications. Established in 1855 with its current form operational since 1946, the company has a long history of engineering excellence. In recent years, Bergen Engines has been involved in innovative projects including the development of engines that can run entirely on hydrogen, a significant step towards reducing emissions in the energy sector.
About Cortus Energy
Cortus Energy AB is a Swedish clean technology company specializing in renewable energy production through their patented WoodRoll® technology. Established in 2006, Cortus Energy focuses on converting biomass into synthetic gas (syngas) using a unique process that offers several advantages over traditional gasification technologies.
The core of Cortus Energy's operations is the WoodRoll® process, which allows for the high-efficiency conversion of various types of biomass into clean syngas. This syngas is composed mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and can be used directly in gas engines or converted into vehicle gas and other forms of renewable energy. Notably, this technology does not require pretreatment of the biomass, which lowers operational costs and enhances feedstock flexibility.
