Swedish Anamma Plant Based Vegan Meat Substitutes takes on the China market

November 6, 2021. The Swedish vegan plant-based brand Anamma today launched into the Chinese market at the fourth China International Import Exhibition in Shanghai China.

An event took place at the Nordic Hub Pavillion and was attended by Jakob Holthuis, Vice Consul General of Sweden In Shanghai.

Anamma will be distributed in China by Scandic Foods Asia over a network of 200 regional distributors with a focus on the retail market.

“We think the Chinese market starts to be ready for a plant-based meat alternative following Oatly’s success with their Oatmilk products”, says Ms. Chelsea Li, CEO of Scandic Foods Asia.

Today, China consumes 28% of the world's meat, including half of all pork. China's market for plant-based meat substitutes was estimated at $910 million in 2018—compared with $684 million in the U.S.—and is projected to grow 20% to 25% annually.

“Awareness about sustainability is not yet on a European level but start to emerge among young consumers. China on the other hand has a high awareness of the health benefits of low meat consumption and the Buddhist tradition is to refrain from eating meat. There is also a tradition of meat replacements based on soya, taro, and tofu, Says Mr. Per Linden, Chairman of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Chapter in Shanghai.

in the 1960s, the average Chinese person consumed less than 5 kg of meat annually, consumption rose to 20 kg per capita by the late 1980s and has now reached 63 kg. Swedes are eating an average of 83.5 kg of meat per person per year, while the US consumes 99 kg per capita and year.

China has already pledged to see carbon emissions peak by 2030 and make the world’s worst polluter carbon-neutral by 2060.

As livestock farming produces 20% to 50% of all man-made greenhouse gases, finding alternative protein sources is crucial to meeting these targets. Halving China’s animal-agriculture sector could result in a 1 billion metric-ton reduction of CO2 emissions reported Time Magazine in a recent article.
