Onitsuka Tiger To Launch “PURPOSEFULLY” - The Latest KOI-Inspired Design
Onitsuka Tiger has joined forces with Koi Klub to develop the latest Koi-inspired sneaker. The Japanese word Koi has six meanings, and in the past, designs have focused on three of these: the Koi fish, ancient ways and intense love. This time, however, it’s all about the fourth sense: the word “purposefully”. And Yoske Nishiumi, the founder of Koi Klub, purposefully chose colours and materials that you wouldn’t normally put together.
The sneaker Koi Klub chose to restyle is the X CALIBER, which Yoske describes as the “coolest Onitsuka Tiger running shoe”. Developed in 1982, the original boasts a unique zigzag ‘quadra lacing’ design – this striking feature means that four eyelets on each side are strategically placed to ensure the perfect fit. Its unique midsole design also provides superior cushioning.
The Koi version of the X CALIBER is even more unique than the original. The denim upper looks dirty and washed-out, rather than rigid, while the selvedge finishing on the stripes and eyelet stay enhance this used look. The shiny multi-coloured laces have an almost feminine appeal, contrasting nicely with the shoe’s overall rather chunky styling. The KOI “purposefully” model will be available in grey/black and grey/brown from April 2011.
ABOUT KOI KLUB
Koi Klub was founded by Yoske Nishiumi, who wanted to offer creative people from all different backgrounds a platform to display their talent and work. Soon after it was established in Berlin, various designers began creating Koi-related artwork. When Onitsuka Tiger became one of its supporters, sneaker-fanatic Yoske was able to realise his dream and create a Koi Klub sneaker design.
