Mobile real time payment is finally possible, Payair and Swedbank announces cooperation for mobile payments.

December 8, 2010 – Uppsala, Sweden, Payair AB and Swedbank have signed an agreement regarding Proof of Concept of a solution for mobile payments. Payair has developed a mobile application for payment of goods and services using your mobile. The solution is based on existing technology and therefore compatible with 80% of the mobile phone models currently being used worldwide. This represents a global market potential for mobile payments of close to 4 billion users.

For a number of years there has been a very powerful trend against increased mobility. The most important prerequisite is of course the mobile. Its not only a tool for voice communication, but for a lot of people the primary connection to internet providing access to email, information, various entertainment such as TV, music and film, GPS, camera etc.

Within the telecom industry mobile payments have for a long time been considered to be the next big thing. Today a number of various initiatives for mobile payment solutions exist around the world. According to industry analyst firm Gartner, the number of active mobile payment users by Q4 in 2009 was approximately 75 million. Within 3 years this number is expected to grow to close to 200 million.

The objective of the cooperation between Payair and Swedbank is to verify and analyze user attitudes, knowledge, behaviour and acceptance of a mobile payment system.  This will be made in a Proof of Concept where approximately 300 users will be able to pay for goods and services in 30 shops and restaurants in the city of Uppsala.  By entering your pin code and accepting the amount the cost is instantly and in real time debited the credit- or charge card chosen by the customer.

”The vision for Swedbank is to offer the leading banking services within the industry to make everyday life easier and more comfortable for our customers by offering a wide range of easy to use and competitive financial services for private as well as corporate customers. As we have seen in a number of areas the mobile technology is an important service carrier and that is why we evaluate different alternatives. Payair´s mobile payment solution is interesting and for us it is valuable to be part of the project in an early stage of the development as well as an eventual commercial launch.”  –  says Erik Cyrus, Head of Group Card Swedbank

The service is developed with a strong focus on the consumer. Extensive market research confirms the need for a mobile payment service to get market acceptance. Key success factors are: easy to become a customer, simple to use, high security, compatible with technology in existing mobiles and doesn’t challenge the existing payment eco-system. For a new payment service to be accepted and successful among the consumers, both security and transaction speed must be equivalent or better than today´s card payments

“For Payair the co operation with Swedbank is extremely important. We will get access to invaluable experience and knowledge that is necessary to make the final adjustments required for a commercial launch. Since 2005 we have been focusing on solving technical challenges. Using the Payair service will be very easy, download the application directly to your mobile, at the point of purchase the cost is visible in the display and then approved by a pin code. No logging in and no extra idle time.” – says Sören Babra, CEO Payair
