Design S for Global Health awarded to Peepoople

Sweden’s most prestigious design award, Design S was presented November 21 in a prize ceremony at the Fotografiska museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Peepoople is proud to announce that we were awarded a Honourable Mention, “Design for Global Health” for Peepoople Design Profile.
Peepoople Design Profile is a development of Peepoo, the single-use, self-sanitising, biodegradable toilet that received a Design S and a Honourable Mention for Environment in 2010. In emergency situations rapid preventions against epidemics are needed and Peepoople has developed a whole Peepoo concept to meet the needs of the 2.6 billion people who still lack access to toilets. The products where developed during 2011 and 2012 and has already been tested with positive response in real emergency situations.

The jury statement was: “Peepoople’s potential leaves no one unmoved. The inspiring basic concept of creating at the individual level a value from human excrement imbues hope of future fulfilment on a global scale. But no product can alone solve a global problem of such magnitude. Therefore the company’s ambition to refine and further develop the concept with practical support solutions is worth every encouragement. Peepoople is therefore the recipient of a special award for design for global health.”

The products that got awarded and are included in the Peepoo Design Profile are: Peepoo Kiti Flat, which is a small, hexagonal, foldable, bottomless paper holder/seat where Peepoo placed. It is made in 1,5 mm cardboard and weighs 80 grams. It is made to withstand harsh conditions for a month. Peepoo Kiti is a more durable holder/seat which has the same shape as Peepoo Kiti Flat but it is made of 1,5 mm PP and weighs 180 grams. Both Peepoo Kitis are designed to be able to achieve function with minimal material, eg. The hexagonal shape easily makes folding possible and prevents buckling. The privacy tent Peepoo Yizi is also included in the concept; it is a product that helps vulnerable people in the crowded environments often following a disaster as well as in dense urban areas. Peepoo Yizi can easily be erected in a home or shelter and it is storable in a small pocket. It is made of 100% polyester with a top in malaria net and weighs 500 grams.

All products have manuals and there is clothing for the Peepoople field staff in a common graphical program based on with and green, with four supporting colours for functional differences. All for ease of understanding, recognition as well as for marketing purposes. The designer behind the Peepoople Design Profile is Professor Anders Wilhelmson together with co-designers Maria Berndtsson and Felix How.

This year there was 218 contributions to the contest.
