Peepoo selected to be part of the exhibition "100 most important innovations of all time".

Peepoo selected to be part of the exhibition 100 most important innovations of all time.

In a recent poll conducted on behalf of the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology Swedish citizens were asked to select the 100 most important innovations of all time. These innovations are now scheduled to be exhibited at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm for the next three to five years. Above the 100 innovations, Peepoo has been selected to be part of the exhibition. 

In a recent poll conducted on behalf of the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology Swedish citizens were asked to select the 100 most important innovations of all time. Through statistically significant studies, adults and sixth grade pupils throughout Sweden, selected the top innovations. These innovations are now scheduled to be exhibited at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm for the next three to five years. Above these selected innovations, Peepoo has been chosen by the museum to be part of the exhibition. Peepoo is a personal, single-use, self-sanitising, fully biodegradable toilet that prevents faeces from contaminating the immediate area as well as the surrounding ecosystem. After use, Peepoo turns into valuable fertiliser that can improve livelihoods and increase food security.

Today, more than 2.6 billion people lack access to basic sanitation. At this moment, 40% of the world’s population lack access to even the simplest latrine. The lack of sanitation creates tremendous problems worldwide including environmental pollution, great social problems and unsafe surroundings, as well as greatly increasing the outbreak of lethal epidemic diseases such as cholera. In areas where even the most basic sanitation is lacking, women and children are most affected, and with their needs in mind, Peepoo was developed in 2005 by Professor Anders Wilhelmson of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

The innovations will be displayed in a 2,000 square-foot exhibition. It will be the largest exhibition the National Museum of Science and Technology has ever produced, and will visualise the innovations in a number of new and exciting ways. 

More than half of the visitors at the National Museum of Science and Technology are children. Therefore, Peepoople has chosen to display Peepoo from the perspective of school children and teachers. Today, Peepoo is used in 22 schools in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, by more than 3000 students and their teachers. The latest school that implemented the Peepoo solution is Little Smile School with a school population of 120 students. Before the Peepoo solution was implemented, the school did not have any toilets at all, and the teachers often faced problems of sick children and girls being absent from school during menstrual periods.

During the exhibition, visitors will be able to read about how Peepoo works as a toilet, learn about how Peepoo as fertiliser helps secure the schools’ food security, and follow two children from the Kibera slum during a day in their lives.

Peepoople will also be on display at the World Water Forum in Marseille, France on March 3, 2012 in an exhibition designed to recreate informal settlements. Here you will be able to see the Peepoo home toilet solution and meet with Peepoople representatives.
