Ambassador of the Month March 2013 - Helena Branning

Every month Project Playground wants to highlight a special person that has made an impact on us. Perhaps due to something they have done for PPG or for others; because he/she has a big heart and has touched us in some way. By having this person answering four questions, we hope to share his/her knowledge and awareness and thus inspire others.

Every member of the Project Playground family are individuals who are united in their strive towards, and belief in, possibilities where improvements, big and small, are real.We know for sure that their existence in this world has an impact, and we dont want it to surpass unnoticed.

She met us, we connected, she had a dream, we had a need – she made it reality. Helena Branning is one of a kind. She took her team from Optiker Branning in Lund and flew down to PPG to do eye screenings on all of our kids and staff at PPG. Without many questions asked she just did it. The impact they made has had immense results. The stories we heard and witnessed can not be explained in words. Don´t take sight for granted. She then came back to hand the glasses out herself and made sure they fitted everyone perfect. Thank You Helena!

Tells us in a few sentences why you choose to work with PPG?

I have always dreamt about being able to use my profession in order to help others. My life changed completely in the spring of 2012 when I was asked to be a sponsor for a charity ball on behalf of PPG. I was excited and full of anticipation for this event. When I met Sofia and heard her talk so passionately about PPGs vision and dedication for the children I knew this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. PPG went straight to my heart and I wanted to make a difference. It was the best decision in my life!

You became a part of the family quickly, what is your best memory of your visits at PPG?

One of the recurring great memories I have from PPG is the love and affection I receive when I come to the center, both from the children and the amazing staff. I am always greeted with big smiles and lots of laughter. The children are always happy and genuine even when they lack so many things in their lives that many of us take for granted. I came as a stranger but was quickly taken in to the PPG family as one of their own. Amazing! One memory that stands out is that of a young man who barely could see his own fingers. He had always been told he was stupid and was put in a special class. I remember so clearly his reaction when I put the test frame on him with the correct lenses. We had brought him outside to show him what the world really looks like and Sofia came walking towards us. He looked at her and put his hand on his chest. Tears welled up in his eyes. His only remark was: I can see! This was an indescribable moment and I will never forget it.

What do you think that individuals can contribute with if they want to help but don’t think that their help counts?

I think there are many different actions people can take to make a difference. It is important to look inside yourself to find the best of your abilities and then using that to help others in need. For me it was natural to use my profession and being able to help with vision. For someone else it could be offering one’s knowledge and time by talking about PPG and making other people aware of the complex problems facing young children in the different townships. If each and every person contributes, even in the smallest ways, together we will make a bigger difference.
