The Mommyheads är tillbaka, och de börjar i Västerås

Intelligens, musikalitet och den speciella typ av fyndighet som oftast brukar reserveras för brittiska band. Allt detta karakteriserar den amerikanska indiekvartetten The Mommyheads.

Deras popmusik har influenser från många av rockhistoriens mer personliga namn, från The Beatles och XTC till Lindsey Buckingham. Här förenas hjärta och hjärna till en mix som skulle toppa all världens listor om det fanns någon rättvisa i musikindustrin.

Under våren 2010 släpps samlings albumet ”Finest Specimens” (Dead Frog Records) samt en remastrad version av ”Flying Suite” från 1995 (Dromedary Records).

I Maj 2010 kommer bandet på sin första turné någonsin i Europa och Sverige med premiär i Västerås torsdagen den 20:e (på 2 Lingon och Blåbär klockan 20:00). Support i Västerås är det lokala indiebandet Die Kinkies.
Turnén arrangeras av Studiefrämjandets kvalitetsscen Nemis tillsammans med Musichelp.

Biografi:

Efter att ha bildats 1987 i New York City släppte bandet fem album på oberoende skivbolag och fick briljant kritik. Bland annat beskrevs dessa uppenbara anglofiler som ett amerikanskt XTC och turnerade hårt. Tio år efter bildandet fick bandet skivkontrakt med Geffen och släppte sitt självbetitlade album.

”Det var på många sätt början till slutet”, konstaterar bandets låtskrivare, sångare och gitarrist Adam Cohen (ej att förväxlas med Leonard Cohens son, som har samma namn).

”I stället för att vara ägna oss åt musik hamnade vi ändlösa möten och anpassade oss efter bolagets önskemål. Trots att vi förblev goda vänner, tappade vi sugen”.

Adam, som till vardags har en framgångsrik karriär inom reklamfilmmusik, har under uppehållet släppt ett soloalbum, det mer blue eyed soul- och rockinspirerade Labello, under namnet Adam Elk.

”Att göra musik åt andra har på många sätt gjort min egen musik ännu mer till en oas för mig. Det ger mig en ännu större känsla av tillfredsställelse”.

Men The Mommyheads var inte klara.

Gruppen återförenades 2008 för att spela in sitt första album på tio år, You’re Not A Dream. Förmodligen bandets starkaste album. Det intressanta är att låtarna skrevs redan innan bandet tog en paus, men är inspelade med all den kunskap de samlat på sig de senaste tio åren. Med hjälp av samma medlemmar som sist – Dan Fisherman, Michael Holt och Jeff Palmer – får Adams låtar en extra dimension som bara kan komma av ett band med unik kemi. Extra fräschör kommer av den ännu mer påtagliga känsla av groove och spontanitet som kompletterar de som alltid genialiska melodierna och observationerna.

THE RETURN OF ONE OF THE 1990s’ GREATEST INDIE ROCK ALBUMS

“The Mommyheads are invigorating and technically masterful,” quoted an early ‘90s review in Indie File, “and play music that is neither all headtrip or all audible morphine, neither all pop or all jazzy stylings. They use harmony smartly, like an instrument to itself. Their songs are tight, snazzy pearls.”

That’s the Mommyheads (Adam Elk, Dan Fisherman, Michael Holt begin_of_the_skype_highlighting end_of_the_skype_highlighting and Jeff Palmer) that we got to know at Dromedary Records in the mid ‘90s. A beautiful, accomplished band that wrote what was described over and over again, in publication after publication, as “perfect pop.”

By the time we were introduced to the band in 1993, they had already built a huge reputation in the indie community, recording a host of seven-inches for various labels, as well as CDs for Fang Records and Simple Machines. And we had the opportunity to release the followup to their Simple Machines CD, Coming Into Beauty.

And what a CD it was. We knew Flying Suit was a great album, but when Magnet wrote “…thinking person’s pop, neither irritatingly intellectual or dauntingly progressive; they never forget the power of the solid backbeat and a great melody. And man, they rock onstage.” we began to realize how fortunate we were to have met these guys. And as they toured the country, jumping on and off tour legs with the likes of The Posies and Guided By Voices, they won new fans everywhere they went.

The Mommyheads achieved cult status in North America in the 1990s, touring relentlessly, releasing four critically acclaimed albums, and influencing a generation of alternative bands with their unique style of progressive, quirky, melodic, groovy pop. In 1997 they signed with Geffen and released a fifth album produced by Don Was, which received extensive airplay. Ten years later they reunited and released a new independent album, You’re Not A Dream.

Now, twelve years after their self-titled major label debut, The Mommyheads are poised to release a beautifully remastered, bonus track-laden version of their classic album Flying Suit – due on May 18. The Mommyheads will launch Flying Suit with a Scandinavian tour in the spring of 2010, booked with the help of ardent fans in Sweden.
