Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) bacteria are responsible each year for around 400 million cases of diarrhoea and hundreds of thousands of deaths in low- and middle-income countries. Scandinavian Biopharma holds global rights to commercialize the product and will support PATH in its goal to make the product affordable and available in low-resource countries.
Every year hundreds of thousands of people die from diarrhea caused by ETEC bacteria. A study published in Nature Genetics describes how the University of Gothenburg, our collaborators, have mapped the spread of ETEC strains around the world. It provides key information about how pathogenic bacteria arise, which will be important for our vaccine currently under development.
Varje år dör hundratusentals av diarrésjukdom som orsakats av ETEC-bakterier. I en studie som publiceras i Nature Genetics har vår samarbetspartner, Göteborgs universitet, kartlagt hur ETEC-bakteriens stammar sprids över världen. Studien ger viktig kunskap om hur sjukdomsframkallande bakterier uppstår vilket har betydelse för vårt diarrévaccin som är under utveckling.
In a recently published article in Vaccine the clinical phase I results with our new oral vaccine against ETEC is presented.The results show that the vaccine was safe, well tolerated and broadly immunogenic – a result that highly exceeded the expectations. The vaccine will be tested in a Phase I/II trials in Bangladesh during next year and in travelers to ETEC-endemic areas the year after.
I en nyligen publicerad artikel i Vaccine presenteras fas I resultat från studie med vårt nya orala vaccin mot ETEC. Resultaten visar att vaccinet var säkert, väl tolererat och ger ett brett immunsvar - ett resultat som med råge överträffade förväntningarna. Vaccinet under 2015 testas i en fas I/II-studie i Bangladesh och året därpå i resenärer till ETEC-endemiska områden.
I dag kunde man på Ekot höra om vårt arbete att ta fram ett nytt vaccin - ett vaccin som ska kunna användas över hela världen. Det svenska diarrévaccin som är under utveckling har redan testas i en första fas på friska vuxna människor i Sverige. Nu flyttas försöken till Bangladesh. Om försöken går bra kan ett vaccin finnas tillgängligt om cirka fem år.

I höstas disputerade Alma Brolund på Karolinska Institutet / Smittskyddsinstitutet. Nu går hon direkt från föräldraledighet till rollen som forskare på Scandinavian Biopharma.
2013 blev ännu ett bra år med fortsatt kraftig tillväxt för Scandinavian Biopharma. Omsättningstillväxten landade på 78% under 2013 då intäkterna för gruppen ökade från 16,5 MSEK 2012 till 29,4 MSEK 2013. Distributionsverksamheten var koncernens tillväxtmotor under 2013 och svarade för hela 24 MSEK i omsättning vilket motsvarar 71% i tillväxt jämfört med året innan.
The international global health nonprofit organization PATH and Scandinavian Biopharma have agreed to continue their collaboration to develop a novel vaccine candidate against diarrhea caused by ETEC. Impressive results obtained in a recently conducted clinical Phase I study triggered this decision. PATH supports the project by providing expertise, know-how, and financial resources.
Travelers’ diarrhea is the leading cause of illness among international travelers to developing countries. ETEC bacteria are the primary cause of this disease. ETEC is also a major cause of diarrheal disease among children living in endemic countries. A clinical Phase I study of a novel vaccine against diarrhea caused by ETEC has been successfully completed. All primary endpoints were achieved.
Turistdiarré är den vanligaste infektionssjukdomen bland resenärer till tropiska länder och orsakas oftast av toxinbildande E. coli bakterier (ETEC). ETEC orsakar även diarré bland barn i utvecklingsländer. Ett nytt drickbart ETEC vaccin har utvecklats i Sverige och en stor Fas I studie av vaccinet har nu framgångsrikt genomförts. Alla fördefinierade mål för studien har uppnåtts och överträffats.
A clinical phase-I, randomized, placebo controlled, double-blinded study of the final composition vaccine, comprising 120 healthy volunteers is presently ongoing. All volunteers have been fully immunized and immunological analyses are ongoing. The study is designed to measure safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine when given either alone or in combination with the immune-enhancing adjuvant dmLT.
