Starfish of Sweden Receives Notice of Allowance for U.S. Patent Application. Strengthening Position for International Commercialization
Starfish of Sweden has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its U.S. patent application titled “Contact and Support Structures Comprising a Plurality of Fingers.” This means the application has been approved for issuance once final formal steps are completed.
The approval strengthens the company’s intellectual property position in a strategically important market and marks a key milestone in Starfish’s continued commercialization journey.
The patent application covers Starfish’s core technology for structures designed to improve contact, pressure redistribution, and microclimate between the body and supporting surfaces during prolonged sitting or lying. The U.S. approval further strengthens the company’s position in discussions with industrial partners across medtech, mobility, and other application areas where pressure injuries and heat buildup are critical challenges.
“This is a strategically important milestone for Starfish. The U.S. is a key market for future partnerships and commercialization, and strong patent protection significantly enhances our business value in discussions with manufacturers, distributors, and potential licensees,” says Michael Hermansson, CEO of Starfish of Sweden.
A Clear Validation of the Technology
The USPTO Notice of Allowance is dated March 24, 2026, and applies to U.S. patent application No. 18/294,760, filed on February 2, 2024. The approved claims cover core aspects of the structural design underlying Starfish’s technology platform.
The announcement comes at a time when Starfish is strengthening its market position through both scientific validation and business development. The company has recently completed a comprehensive study together with researchers at Lund University, showing that skin temperature was on average 7% lower using Starfish’s solution compared to reference products.
A Scalable Platform with Broad Market Potential
Starfish’s strategy is to commercialize its technology through partnerships and licensing agreements with established industry players. The platform can be integrated into a wide range of products where prolonged sitting or lying increases the risk of pressure injuries, including:
- hospital mattresses
- wheelchair cushions
- operating tables
- intensive care and transport care solutions
- rehabilitation and elderly care
- office furniture
- vehicle seating
“We are building a platform where patent protection, technical validation, and commercial partnerships reinforce each other. This U.S. patent approval is a key milestone that brings us closer to market and strengthens our ability to achieve international impact,” says Michael Hermansson.
