Ethan Hawke and Josef Fares join Bio Skandia’s honorary board

Bio Skandia is strengthening its honorary board with two internationally renowned creative figures: Hollywood actor, director and writer Ethan Hawke, and award-winning game designer and director Josef Fares. Together with Stellan Skarsgård and Tarik Saleh, they form a unique group comprising some of today’s most influential storytellers.

Ethan Hawke
is to become the first American member of Bio Skandia’s honorary board. With five Oscar nominations, winner of the Stockholm Achievement Award at the 2023 Stockholm International Film Festival, and a career spanning four decades, he has established himself as one of the world’s most respected actors and filmmakers. Through his roles in films such as Training Day, Boyhood and Richard Linklater’s acclaimed Before trilogy, he has become a central figure in modern cinema, whilst also being a strong advocate for the cinema as a cultural institution.

Preserving the historic movie houses of the world is imperative for the future of cinema, and Bio Skanadia is one of the finest I've had the pleasure of visiting, says Ethan Hawke

Josef Fares
also represents a new generation of storytellers who successfully move between different art forms. Following his breakthrough as a film director with films such as Jalla! Jalla! and Kopps, he has become one of the world’s most acclaimed game developers. Through international hits such as A Way Out, It Takes Two and Split Fiction, he has demonstrated how powerful stories can engage audiences far beyond the cinema screen.

I am convinced that cinemas will make a comeback in the future, which is why Bio Skandia, one of Sweden’s most beautiful cinemas, must remain open, says Josef Fares.

Actor Stellan Skarsgård and the internationally acclaimed director Tarik Saleh are already members of Bio Skandia’s honorary board.

The aim of the honorary board is to safeguard the cinema’s culturally significant heritage whilst contributing to its continued development and relevance in the future. By bringing together some of the most influential voices in the world of film and storytelling, Bio Skandia aims to ensure that the cinema remains a vibrant and central venue for the art of film for generations to come.

It feels absolutely fantastic to welcome Ethan Hawke and Josef Fares to Bio Skandia’s honorary board, and this is an important step for us. Ethan represents the very best of international cinema and has been a passionate advocate of the cinema experience throughout his career. Josef is one of Sweden’s most innovative creators and demonstrates how storytelling can evolve and reach new generations by combining the language of film with interactive experiences. Together with Stellan Skarsgård and Tarik Saleh, we have an honorary board with outstanding international standing and creative breadth, says Vince Scheynius, CEO of Bio Skandia.

The fact that both a Hollywood icon and one of the world’s most successful game designers are now joining forces reflects Bio Skandia’s ambition to both preserve film history and look to the future. The future of film is shaped by the intersection of tradition and innovation – and Bio Skandia aims to be the natural home for both.

Bio Skandia
is one of Sweden’s most iconic cinemas. It opened in 1923 and was designed by the renowned architect Gunnar Asplund, who created an elegant and intricately detailed interior in the Art Deco style and ‘Swedish Grace’. Skandia is renowned for its grand auditorium with beautiful ceiling murals, red velvet seats and a magnificent atmosphere reminiscent of the golden age of cinema. Bio Skandia – Bar Lido, the cinema’s new film bar and social hub, has also recently opened, where visitors can enjoy a carefully selected range of food, wine and drinks.
