Join Forces with Ethan and Maya Hawke: Stockholm International Film Festival's Crowdfunding Campaign to Preserve the Iconic Skandia-Theater!

Skandia on Drottninggatan in Stockholm just turned 100 years old but it is now at risk of closing for good. The Stockholm International Film Festival, which has shown films in the beautiful 1920s salon for over 30 years, won’t allow this to happen. We want to keep Skandia open as an obvious meeting place for the countries film lovers. Stockholm International Film festival is therefore starting a crowfunding campaign to save the historic cinema Skandia together with the public. The campaign is launched together with the Hollywood actors Ethan Hawke and Maya Hawke and Stellan Skarsgård. Help us keep one of the world's greatest cinemas alive - for at least another 100 years!

In the fall of 1923, the world-famous cinema on Drottninggatan was ready after being designed by Ragnar Hjorth and completed and creatively decorated by Sweden's most prominent architect of all time, Gunnar Asplund. In parallel with Skandia, Asplund then worked with the future world heritage site Skogskyrkogården and Stockholm's City Library.

For 34 years, the Stockholm Film Festival has had the honor of rolling out the red carpet for our gala premieres in Skandia's temple-like foyers. Over the years, film stars such as Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Wong Kar-wai, Susan Sarandon, Lauren Bacall, etc. have all received film awards at Skandia.

We are extremely proud to allow Nordic cineastes to meet the film world's greatest icons here on the stage where the silent film orchestra once played - and contribute to keeping this magnificent Stockholm gem alive.

We see it as a matter of course that the Skandia theater should remain a film temple in Stockholm's inner city. Asplund's cinema is not yet listed as a building monument and therefore lacks the protection that this unique gem deserves. The cinema was built when film was still a young art form and we want future film lovers and filmmakers to be able to take part in great film experiences here.

Help us preserve this cultural treasure - together we save the Skandia Theater.
