Sean Baker receives "Stockholm Visionary Award"

Sean Baker, the director behind the Palme d'Or winner "Anora" is awarded "Stockholm Visionary Award". The Stockholm International Film Festival opens with a screening of "Anora" and in connection with the screening, Sean Baker receives the award on November 6 at Bio Skandia.

The Stockholm Visionary Award is awarded to an American indie favorite with an empathetic eye towards the misfits, minorities and motley subcultures of the promised land. A visionary filmmaker whose filmography allows us to view mythological American settings such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Disney World from a completely new perspective. In his exploration of masculinity, immigration and the sex industry, he has entered a humanist film tradition alongside directors such as Ken Loach and Andrea Arnold.
With a visual breadth that moves from iPhone photos to pastel wide views in 35 mm, this independent director fills the screen with humor, crackling life and compassion without patting anyone on the head. We are proud to award the Stockholm Visionary Award to Sean Baker.

Sean Baker is educated at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. He is an award-winning writer/director/producer known for "Take Out" (2004), "Prince of Broadway" (2008), "Starlet" (2012), "Tangerine" (2015), "The Florida Project" (2017) and "Red Rocket" (2021).

Sean Baker's films, of which "Tangerine" and "The Florida Project" have been shown at the Stockholm Film Festival, examine marginalized groups in general and the everyday life of sex workers in particular. With his eighth feature film, the indie humanist and filmmaker Sean Baker proves that he is one of the most skilled contemporary portrayers of the modern working class in the United States. "Anora" is a deeply moving tale of how the American dream collides with the reality of immigrants - a wild odyssey between strip clubs and Vegas suites that is the film event of the year on the big screen!

The Stockholm Visionary Award was established in 2004 with the aim of recognizing the visionaries in modern film. The prize has previously been awarded to pioneering filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Roy Andersson, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sam Mendes and Steve McQueen in 2024.

The film is shown at Bio Skandia on November 6, tickets at stockholmsfilmfestival.se
