Stockholm International Film Festival Saves The Skandia Cinema

Stockholm International Film Festival is taking over the operations of the legendary Skandia cinema. This will be the start of a new chapter in the history of the festival and the Skandia cinema.

"We are overwhelmed by the great response we have received from audiences, industry colleagues and the business. We are touched and deeply grateful for the commitment to the "Save Skandia" campaign. It has given us the strength and courage to take this step," says Dharma Garde Palme, Producer Stockholm International Film Festival.

Running this historic cinema strengthens the festival's presence and commitment to promoting film culture and offering unique film and cultural experiences to the audience.

Skandia, designed by the world famous architect Gunnar Asplund who is represented with his sketches of Skandia at MOMA in NYC, has been one of Sweden's most beloved cinemas and has a long and proud history spanning over a hundred years. Architects from all over the world flock to see the famous cinema. By continuing to care for and operate this gem of a cinema, we are building on a legacy while creating new opportunities for film lovers to watch films together in a unique environment.

"It is an honor to run a treasure like Skandia and we feel very humbled by the task. We have been showing films here for more than 30 years and film stars and filmmakers from all over the world have shown their work to enthusiastic audiences. Skandia could become a new national stage for film." says Dharma Garde Palme, Producer Stockholm International Film Festival.

Stockholm International Film Festival's new operations will bring exciting changes and improvements to the cinema, including technical upgrades, expanded programming and collaborations with other cultural actors, as well as new innovative initiatives to make the cinema a central place for film culture and community in Stockholm. We want to do this together with all film and cinema lovers in Sweden. To make this project possible, we have created a fundraising campaign where both companies and individuals can help take the business to the next level. No contribution is too small.

Furthermore, the Swedish and international film industry, including Stellan Skarsgård, Ethan and Maya Hawke, Sam Mendes and others, together with architects, the KTH School of Architecture and Stockholm University, have shown great commitment to Skandia's survival.

We would like to thank Filmstaden for the fine handover and continued good co-operation. We are deeply grateful to our audience and the public who have so far supported us through the fundraising campaign.

With the help of our fundraising campaign, we can now begin our journey to invest in technology and equipping Skandia to open in early February 2024. Read more about Stockholm Film Festival's Skandia here!
