Site selection - The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority to review application
The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co. (SKB) has selected Forsmark in the municipality of Östhammar as the site for a repository for spent nuclear fuel. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority is responsible for evaluating a future license application for the construction of a spent nuclear fuel repository at the site.
SKB announced yesterday that they wish to site a repository for spent nuclear fuel at Forsmark in the municipality of Östhammar. Before construction work begins, SKB must apply for a license from the government, something they plan to do during 2010. It is the responsibility of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority to review the application according to the Act on Nuclear Activities, while the Environmental Court examines it according to the Environmental Code.
"When SKB submits their application, we will examine whether the site and the method proposed by SKB meet the legal and regulatory requirements that pertain to nuclear safety and radiation protection" says Patrik Borg, acting head of the Unit for Disposal of Radioactive Waste.
Sweden is one of the first nations in the world where a license application for a spent nuclear fuel repository will be evaluated.
"We have continuously developed our competence and reviewed SKB's repository concept for more than 20 years and we will be prepared to carry out an independent and critical review of SKB's application when submitted" says Björn Dverstorp, senior advisor in geological repositories at the Unit for Disposal of Radioactive Waste.
The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority will not take a position with regard to either SKB's choice of site or method, prior to the submission of the license application.
