Almost a quarter of Sweden’s diesel is now biodiesel
During the first half of 2016, biodiesel accounted for almost a quarter (23.8%) of all diesel fuel delivered to the Swedish transport fuel market. This is according to an analysis made by Svebio, the Swedish Bioenergy Association and based on data from Statistics Sweden. Biodiesel includes HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils) and FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters). HVO is based on feedstock like tall oil from pulp industries, recycled vegetable oils and fats. FAME is mainly rapeseed based diesel.
At the same time, one sixth (16.6%) of all transport fuels on the Swedish market were biofuels. This also includes ethanol and biogas.
Svebio’s CEO Gustav Melin responds to the data:
– The large use of biodiesel and other biofuels shows significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish transport sector. We are moving fast to reach the Swedish political target to reduce the emissions in the transport sector by 70 percent by 2030 (compared to 1990) and to have a fossil free transport sector soon after.
Sweden and Finland are leading the introduction of biofuels among the EU member states. Sweden achieved the EU target of 10 percent renewable energy in the transport sector well ahead of schedule.
