Double awards for prestigious Swedish design

Swedish Tyre Recycling has won two prestigious design awards at Svenska Designpriset 2025 – one for the anniversary book Repurposed Performance and one for the inspirational film When Glass Meets Steel. The awards highlight the growing interest in creative uses of recycled tyre materials and demonstrate how design can play a vital role in shifting perceptions of their value.

On 23 October, Sweden’s design community gathered at Nalen in Stockholm to celebrate the country’s most inspiring work in design and communication. When the winners were announced, it was revealed that Swedish Tyre Recycling had been recognised in both categories in which they were nominated.

The first award went to Repurposed Performance, a coffee table book that presents recycled tyre materials as resources full of potential and surprising qualities. Produced entirely in-house, the book received a Silver Medal from the jury in the category Editorial – Book. The recognition is particularly meaningful as most other entries in the competition were developed in collaboration with established design agencies.

– The book was born out of a need to showcase recycled tyre rubber in a new and unexpected way. Many people are unaware of the possibilities this material offers. Through an accessible and inspiring format, we hope more people will discover the material’s second life, says Frida Grunewald, Communications Manager and designer of the anniversary book.

Swedish Tyre Recycling was also honoured for its film When glass meets steel, in which glass artist Lisa Hartwig Ericson explores what happens when steel recovered from end-of-life tyres is used in glass art. The film won the People’s Choice in the category Film/Animation – Information, Culture, Leisure 2025. It was created as part of the Art of Recycling initiative in collaboration with True North/True Production.

– These two awards show that our approach to design and communication is making a difference. More people are discovering the value of repurposed tyre materials and the attractive properties they offer. It’s an important shift, says Fredrik Ardefors, CEO of Swedish Tyre Recycling.

– Both the book and the film aim to broaden the perception of what recycled tyre materials can contribute to. The recognition we’ve received from both the jury and the public means a great deal for us and the industry, he adds.
