Press release -
Lasercom donates thousands of mine clearance hooks to save life in Ukraine
Lasercom AB, a leader in laser cutting, welding and precision manufacturing, has made a significant contribution to Ukraine’s mine clearance efforts by donating between 2000-3000 specially designed mine clearance hooks.
In early 2024, Christopher Garrett, ex-army and mine clearance trainer, reached out to Fredrik Spegel, Lasercom’s site manager, requesting tools to assist in clearing landmines and enhancing safety. In response, Lasercom donated the hooks free of charge, playing a vital role in Ukraine’s ongoing war efforts.
Christopher, who has been involved in mine clearance since 2009 and has worked in Ukraine since 2014, trains military personnel, police, and volunteers to use the hooks as part of their demining kits. Since the war began, he has trained around 3000 people.
-Lasercom’s hooks have been crucial in safely clearing mines and saving lives. Their support has made a huge difference in protecting our teams and civilians, Christopher Garret says.
Christopher was introduced to Fredrik through a mutual contact, Michael, who was looking for Swedish manufacturers capable of producing the hooks. Fredrik and the team at Lasercom quickly designed and produced the hooks to meet Christopher’s specifications.
-When Christopher reached out, we knew we could help. We are proud that our tools are making a life-saving impact, Fredrik Spegel says.
The hooks allow deminers to safely remove mines from a distance of 40-50 meters, greatly reducing the risk of injury. In some instances, the hooks have even been used to rescue people from dangerous areas.
-These hooks help us teach essential safety measures, lowering the risk of injury for more people in this conflict zone, Christopher added.
The municipality of Haparanda is also proud of the initiative.
-I am proud that Lasercom, a Haparanda-based manufacturer, has chosen to leverage its industry-leading expertise to make a significant, positive contribution toward mitigating collateral damage from one of the most defining conflicts of our time, Janne Lind says, Mayor of Haparanda.
Lasercom encourages others to support Christopher’s demining efforts. Donations can be made through Prevail, an organization supporting explosive clearance, trauma care, and humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
