Tengbom wins sustainability prize at Dezeen Awards 2024

Tengbom's Stockholm office was awarded the Sustainable Interior prize at the Dezeen Awards 2024 in London yesterday. “Tengbom's self-designed office offers a fun new take on what a sustainable interior can look like”, jury stated in their motivation.

Dezeen is one of the world's most influential architecture, interior, and design publications, with over three million weekly readers. For the seventh edition of Dezeen Awards, more than 4,130 entries from 82 countries were judged. The Sustainable category highlights the most impactful global sustainability projects, awarded across six different disciplines. Tengbom's Stockholm office won in the Sustainable Interior Architecture category.

“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition, which shows how sustainable goals and cost efficiency can act as catalysts for architectural creativity. The result is a beautiful and playful work environment appreciated by both our employees and collaborators,” says Mark Humphreys, Lead Architect and Practice Director at Tengbom.

Located in a former 1934 mineral water factory in Stockholm, Tengbom designed its office with clear sustainability ambitions and a limited budget. The goal was to create a creative environment that prioritizes collaboration and well-being. Featuring reused furniture, natural colors and materials, primarily consisting of wood, and insertians of biophilia, the office achieves sustainability on multiple levels. By celebrating imperfection and engaging the senses with unexpected design elements, the office fosters a creative atmosphere that encourages knowledge-sharing and innovation.

Dezeen Awards is an annual international competition celebrating the best projects in architecture, interiors, design, and sustainability, showcasing innovative solutions and excellent design from architects and designers worldwide.

Jury’s Statement:

“Tengbom's self-designed office offers a fun new take on what a sustainable interior can look like. The renovation easily rivals a new build interior, proving that reuse doesn't have to mean sacrificing on aesthetics. Through the considered use of colour and existing furnishings, the studio was able to revitalise a former industrial space without the need for mountains of new materials."
