Ahead of Cykelvasan 90 2026 – news, facts and trivia

On Saturday, August 8 at 08:00, it’s time for the 2026 edition of Cykelvasan 90. As always, the Nordic region’s biggest mountain bike race welcomes both elite riders and recreational cyclists, and it will be broadcast live in four countries. In Sweden, Sveriges Television will air the race on SVT1 and SVT Play from 07:50–12:00. Recreational participants can be followed throughout the day at Vasaloppet.TV. This year’s course is three kilometres shorter, and the elite race features an exciting new sprint competition. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Cykelvasan 90 2026.

At present, more than 16,000 cyclists are registered for this weekend’s events, all of which finish in Mora:

Registration remains open for all races right up until the start.

Vasaloppet Bike Festival in Lindvallen, Sälen, runs throughout the week and it’s the perfect way to prepare for the weekend races. For the third consecutive year, the mountains will be filled with cycling, energy and inspiration for the whole family. This year’s festival also marks the debut of two new cycling events in the mountains, perfect as a warm-up for Cykelvasan. The recreational race Vasaloppet Bike Festival Gravel is first on Wednesday, August 5, followed by the Vasaloppet Bike Festival XCC Youth competition on Thursday, August 6.

Also on Thursday, August 6 at 17:00, Lindvallen hosts Cykelvasasprinten 2026, featuring a star-studded field competing for prize money and prestige. The programme also includes interviews and race previews throughout the day.

Vasaloppet’s Summer Week continues with running on August 14–15, featuring the individual races Funkisvasan, Trailvasan 10, Trailvasan 30, Ultravasan 45 and Ultravasan 90, as well as the Vasastafetten relay. A Barnens Vasalopp running event for children will also be held.

The 2026 Cykelvasan races have participants from 40 countries, including Sweden. The nations with most participants (excluding Sweden) are Norway, Denmark, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Austria, France and Belgium.

Participants in Cykelvasan 2026 range in age from 7 to 87! The average age is 44.0 years. Together, they are registered to cycle 1,179 030 km, equivalent to 28 times around the Earth.

CYKELVASAN 90, SATURDAY, AUGUST 8, 2026
Cykelvasan 90 starts at the Vasaloppet start in Sälen and passes all the classic Vasaloppet checkpoints. The total 92 kilometres run on forest roads and wooden walkways across marshes, through bright pine forests, past rustic summer farms and meadows down towards the finish line portal in Mora.

New course for 2026
In 2026, participants in Cykelvasan 90 and Cykelvasan Öppet Spår will experience even more of the true Vasaloppet feeling. More than 7 km of the course has been moved from asphalt and gravel roads onto sections matching the Vasaloppet trail. The Cykelvasan 2026 course revisions focus primarily on two locations. Between Tennäng (approximately 4 km after Mångsbodarna) and Risberg, around 2 km has been rerouted onto the ski trail. Between Risberg and Evertsberg, approximately 5 km has been moved from gravel roads and asphalt directly onto the Vasaloppet trail. As a result, the total distance has been reduced from 95 km to 92 km.

When Cykelvasan was first held in 2009, around 40 km of the course was on asphalt. Today, only 3 km remain on paved roads – through the villages of Evertsberg and Gopshus, and on the finishing stretch into Mora.

New sprint competition – a race within the race
Instead of awarding a sprint prize winner at each checkpoint, cyclists will collect points throughout the race, receiving an overall sprint result based on all seven checkpoints. The first five cyclists at each checkpoint receive 10, 7, 5, 3 and 2 points respectively. At Evertsberg, double points are awarded: 20, 14, 10, 6 and 4 points. At the prize ceremony, the top three women and top three men in the sprint competition will be awarded prizes of 10,000 SEK, 7,000 SEK and 4,000 SEK.

Sprint checkpoints in Cykelvasan 90, 2026: Smågan 11 km, Mångsbodarna 26 km, Risberg 36 km, Evertsberg 49 km, Oxberg 64 km, Hökberg 74 km, Eldris 83 km. Total distance: 92 km.

Highest point sprint prize
From the start line in Berga by, Sälen, it is 3,000 metres – with a climb of 178 vertical metres – to the highest point of the Vasaloppet course, 528 metres above sea level. The first woman and man to reach the summit receive 5,000 SEK each.

The top 30 women from 2025 and the top 30 men from 2025 have start numbers in 2026 corresponding to their 2025 placements.

In the leisure class, everyone wears a blue number bib.

At the start in Sälen, a so-called master start will be applied. This means that an ATV will guide participants at a limited speed from the start area to the road crossing before the first hill. During this stretch, all cyclists must maintain their position in the line and not pass the ATV. Separate start groups for women are available in Cykelvasan 90’s leisure class, for those who prefer it.

Prize ceremony
The winner of Cykelvasan 90 receives a laurel wreath, Vasaloppet’s new victory trophy, a Dala horse, a gold medal and 40,000 SEK. The top ten women and top ten men each receive prize money. The total prize sum for 2026 (including the new sprint prizes) is 288,000 SEK. The prize ceremony takes place in the finish area in Mora at 14:00. (A flower ceremony for the top three will take place immediately after they cross the finish line.)

FACTS Cykelvasan’s development year by year
2009: The first ever Cykelvasan 30, Cykelvasan 45 and Cykelvasan 90. The terms “Vasaloppet Winter Week” and “Vasaloppet Summer Week” are coined. With near 2,000 participants, Cykelvasan immediately becomes Sweden’s biggest mountain bike race.
2010: Cykelvasasprinten ran for the first time in Lindvallen. Barnens Vasalopp Cykel (originally called Barnens Cykelvasa) for young children has also been arranged since 2010.
2011: The start in Sälen moves from Tjärnhedens IP to the Vasaloppet start in Berga by.
2012: Ungdomscykelvasan starts, a competition for youths aged 11–16 (run on the same course as Cykelvasan 30).
2015: Cykelvasan Öppet Spår is introduced, based on the winter version of Öppet Spår.
2016: First time the women’s class start in Cykelvasan 90 takes place before the men’s class start (previously there was a joint start).
2017: First year the race runs completely off roads with traffic.
2018: Cykelvasan’s races are distributed across three different days.
2020: Cykelvasan was part of Hemmavasan due to the pandemic.
2021: Cykelvasan 90 Elit ran while others could complete Hemmavasan Cykel.
2022: Recreational athletes back again. SVT live broadcast for the first time.
2023: The shorter races moved to Friday. New route at the start: the first uphill slope is now included, just like in winter. Ladies who wished could join their own start group in the leisure class.
2024: A cycle along the Västerdalälven river is introduced after the start in Sälen, before the first hill. 200,000 cyclists finish.
2025: New start times, and a new route in Risberg makes Cykelvasan 90 and Cykelvasan Öppet Spår one kilometre shorter (95 km)
2026: Seven kilometres of the course are moved from asphalt and gravel roads onto the classic winter Vasaloppet trail. The total distance is reduced to 92 km. Only 3 km of the race are now on asphalt – through the villages of Evertsberg and Gopshus, and on the finishing stretch into Mora. A new sprint competition is introduced.

Official Police & Firefighter Swedish Championship in MTB Marathon 2026
In connection with Cykelvasan 90, the Swedish championship for police officers and firefighters will also take place. There are five classes for men and five for women, all starting together in the leisure class start group 7. Swedish champions are crowned and a prize ceremony takes place once the first three finishers in each class have crossed the Mora finish line.

Vasaloppstrippeln x 3
Vasaloppstrippeln means completing three different types of Vasaloppet during one and the same calendar year. The participant skis in Vasaloppet’s Winter Week and runs and cycles the same distance in Vasaloppet’s Summer Week in August. The distances are 90, 45 or 30 kilometres.

Registration for Cykelvasan 2027 and other Summer Week 2027 races opens with an “early bird discount” from Wednesday, August 5 through Thursday, August 27 on Vasaloppet’s website www.vasaloppet.se (After which regular pricing applies.)
