PRESS RELEASE FROM VASALOPPET: Everything ahead of Tjejvasan 2026 – huge interest in participating

On Saturday, February 21, the 38th edition of Tjejvasan takes place – the world’s largest cross-country ski race exclusively for women. Currently, 7,850 participants are registered, the highest number since 2017, ready to take on the 30 km course from the start in Oxberg to the finish in Mora. Anyone wishing to join can still register, including on race day. Tjejvasan is a Challenger event in Ski Classics and it includes competition classes for both seniors (D21) and juniors (D17–20). Sveriges Television will broadcast live. Here is all the key information ahead of Tjejvasan 2026.

Registration can be completed online, or on location at the race office in Mora starting Thursday, February 19 at 12:00. You can also register at the start area race office in Oxberg on Saturday until 11:30. In the leisure class you may participate from the year you turn 11 (born 2015), and in the competition class from the year you turn 17 (born 2009). The youngest participants in Tjejvasan 2026 are 10 years old and the oldest are 84. The average age this year is 41.1. Participants come from all 21 Swedish counties and from 28 nations.

Since the first Tjejvasan in 1988, a total of 208,076 finishes have been recorded!

Elite competitors
Around 5–6% of participants ski in the competition class, while the rest ski in the leisure class. The top ten from Tjejvasan 2025 will start with the same bib numbers in 2026 as their finishing positions from 2025.

The start list includes several of this season’s top athletes from the Ski Classics Pro Tour (see standings below). Each Ski Classics skier may count their best result from the Challengers series during the season. Victory in a Challenger race — such as Tjejvasan — gives 50 points (a Grand Classics victory such as Vasaloppet gives 500 points, a standard long-distance race 300 points, and an ITT race 200 points). Results also affect rankings that determine start positions in Pro Tour races. For those who did not compete in a Challenger roller-ski race last summer or another Challenger race this winter, their Tjejvasan result becomes especially important.

In the senior class we find several of last year’s top finishers, including winner Jenny Larsson, runner-up Louise Lindström, and third-place finisher Julie Kvale Støstad. Alongside top long-distance skiers currently competing in Ski Classics, many additional competitors are entered, such as Moa Lundgren, who finished third the last time she skied Tjejvasan in 2024, and Ida Dahl, winner in 2023. Olympic sprinter Johanna Hagström is also registered.

Around 50 participants are currently signed up to the junior competition class (D17–20), which was introduced in 2022.

More registrations may be submitted right up until the start. See the start list.

Prizes in the senior class
Individual prizes in the form of training scholarships totalling 134,000 SEK (including sprint prizes) are awarded. The winner receives the brand new trophy from Kosta Boda and 50,000 SEK. The top 6 are all awarded prizes.
Hökberg sprint prize: 5,000 SEK. Eldris sprint prize: 5,000 SEK.
Placement medals – gold, silver and bronze – are awarded to those who place first, second and third. All participants who reach the finish line will receive a medal.

Record bonus
If a skier sets a new record time in Tjejvasan they will receive a 50,000 SEK record bonus. The current Tjejvasan record is from 2022 when Britta Johansson Norgren completed the race in 1.15.39.2, beating her own record time of 1.16.44 from 2017 by one minute and five seconds. Britta's time to Hökberg in 2022 was 28.36 min and Eldris 53.56 min. The second-fastest race was in 2024, when Kati Roivas finished in 1:16:14, just 35 seconds from the record.

Kransmas
This year's Kransmas, the 38th, is William Mathisen, a snowboarder from Sälens IF.

The Kransmas honorary award
When Tjejvasan celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018, a new tradition was introduced where all Kransmas through the years join together to raise money for a woven pillow from Mora Hemslöjd, embroidered with "Kransmasarnas hederspris Tjejvasan 2026" (The Kransmas honorary award Tjejvasan 2026). The pillow is awarded to the Tjejvasan victor.

Prizes in the junior class
Individual prizes in the form of training scholarships are also awarded in the junior class, totalling 22,000 SEK to the top six participants. The junior class winner receives 10,000 SEK. Sprint prizes are awarded to the first woman, irrespective of class. Should a junior competitor cross the finish line first of all, she would of course win Tjejvasan, receiving the victory wreath and 50,000 SEK, but it's not possible to win the prize money from both classes.

Most top 3 placements in Tjejvasan
Britta Johansson Norgren (8 top three placements), Susanne Nyström (7 top three placements), Sofia Bleckur and Lina Korsgren (5 top three placements), Elin Ek and Emelie Öhrstig (4 top three placements), Anna Frithioff, Jenny Hansson, Emilia Lindstedt, Katerina Smutná (3 top three placements).

Youngest and oldest Tjejvasan victor
Karin Värnlund is Tjejvasan's youngest winner. She was 19 years and 114 days old when she won in 1988. The oldest winner is Hilde G Pedersen who was 39 years and 112 days old in 2004.

Biggest winning margin in Tjejvasan
In 1998, Bente Martinsen won 4 minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Emelie Öhrstig. The second longest winning margin is from 2017 when Britta Johansson Norgren set a new record time and won 2 minutes and 34 seconds ahead of Emilia Lindstedt.

Sprint finishes in Tjejvasan
Those placed first and second have been within one second of each other in 19 of the 37 Tjejvasan races. (In 2009 the top seven women crossed the finish line within three seconds.) 18 of the 21 latest races have been settled via sprints on the finishing stretch. Last year, the top four all crossed the finish line within a second. The last time the winner could ski up the final stretch on their own was in 2020, when Britta Johansson Norgren won by 38 seconds.

2021 Lina Korsgren

FIS videos

https://vasaloppet.se/en/guides-and-tips/ski/how-to-ski-correctly-in-classic-style-races-part-1

Vasaloppet's technical checks are held in Tjejvasan and in other classic style races. For the Winter Week 2026, these checks will be reinforced, and officials will display warning signs along the course for participants skiing with an illegal technique. If a skier receives multiple verbal warnings, the jury may impose stricter penalties.

NOTE: Anyone wishing to skate ski may participate in Öppet Spår Monday 30 or Nattvasan 30, both of which are freestyle races.

Watch Vasaloppet's sports director Tommy Höglund explain on SVT Dalarna how to ski correctly.

Course change near Mora Ski Stadium
Starting this year, there is a new course section of about one kilometer near the ski stadium in Hemus, roughly 4 km from the finish. The Vasaloppet track approaching the stadium now passes through more rolling terrain, and participants will ski straight into the stadium instead of, as before, passing alongside it. This will also make viewing easier for spectators. The total 30 km distance to Mora is unaffected by the change.

Flower ceremony and awards ceremony Tjejvasan 2026
A flower ceremony will be held by the belfry for the top three skiers in the senior class, about ten minutes after the third woman crosses the finish line.

The official Tjejvasan awards ceremony will take place at 13:00 on Mora Nisse's square in the finish area in Mora, for sprint prize winners and the top six finishers in both the junior and senior class.
