Veolia supports BASF by providing industrial utilities to BASF’s battery materials plant in Harjavalta

Veolia Nordic has, through its subsidiary Suomen Teollisuuden Energiapalvelut - STEP Oy, signed a long-term partnership agreement with BASF Battery Materials Finland Oy (BASF) for the delivery of industrial utilities to BASF’s battery materials plant to be built in the Harjavalta Industrial Park in Finland.

Veolia will design, build, finance and operate a utility plant (steam, water and pressurized air) together with adjacent pipeline infrastructure. Veolia will use the experience and knowledge from the operative organisation already in place at the Harjavalta industrial park to operate the new installations dedicated to BASF. In addition, the recovered energy from other industries in the Harjavalta industrial park will be used to minimize the environmental footprint by replacing fossil fuels.

Veolia brings all its expertise and know-how within industrial utilities and plant operation to provide a seamless delivery of utilities.

"Lithium-ion batteries are growing in demand as we are facing increasing electrification in the transport sector throughout the world. We are proud to contribute to securing a utility supply with limited environmental footprint to the new battery cluster in Finland. This contract defines Veolia’s strategy. Our solution to use recovered heat and other already available sources of energy within the industrial park to supply the process of BASF is a textbook example of applied circular economy. At the same time we contribute to the ecological transformation of our societies by supporting technical solutions addressing the global environmental challenges", concludes Håkon Vist, CEO of Veolia Nordic.

The construction of the utility plant will start during 2020 and the commissioning date is planned for late 2021.
