Introducing a new generation of Personalised Medical Devices

The future of Health Care is a subject that has been under intense speculation and debate in recent times. Ergonomidesign brings together 40 years of design experience in the Life Science industry into a future scenario, including software apps for Microsoft Surface combined with a new generation of monitoring devices. The device, miniME, will be able to monitor everything from body temperature to heart rate, as well as specific blood samples, such as infection detection, coagulation time and hormone levels. It will be programmed with apps according to the Doctor’s prescription and data will be continuously uploaded to the cloud, thereby dramatically increasing access to biometric data both for patients and Health Care Professionals.

The miniME device synchronising and identifying with Microsoft Surface. Displaying personal health record.
By pioneering software and hardware combined with a well-resolved Health Care ‘ecosystem’ of the future set in the year 2015, Ergonomidesign has made it possible to actually experience and try out the Future of Integrated Health Care. miniME, a concept for demonstrating personal medical devices of the future, will be presented for the first time at Medica, the world’s largest event for the medical sector in Düsseldorf, Nov 17-20.

Much like the mobile ‘app-world’, patients will use personalised medical devices containing embedded software (apps), which synchronises with relevant sensors on our body. miniME connects biometric sensors placed on the body to track health stats using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and NFC (Near Field Communication). The tiny device measures ECG, blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry, body temperature, blood glucose, cholesterol , haemoglobin and could even detect if a person falls over, via a drop sensor.
miniME forwards the physical condition data to The Cloud (internet), offering patients and Health Care Professionals constant access to the information. Communication with selected shared networks can be via mobile devices, other specialist medical devices and smart surfaces. In the Future of Integrated Health Care the process of diagnosis and treatment will be faster and seamless, resulting in increased quality of care. We will also have better prerequisites for preventative care, since our health status is easily accessible to all of us.

“The Future of Integrated Health Care” scenario including the functioning software prototype (Helping Hands) for Microsoft Surface and a personalised medical concept device (miniME) was developed by the Life Science team at Ergonomidesign. The team includes user experience and interaction designers, design strategists, futurists, graphic designers, developers and health care professionals. Their challenge was to envision the future of Life Science and develop possible solutions for the world to test, use and reflect on.
