Vingmed to Distribute Autonomous Laboratory Robots to Support Biomedical Scientists in the Nordics

Vingmed has signed a distribution agreement with United Robotics Group to bring autonomous laboratory robot solutions to the Nordic market. The robot, uLab Mobile, performs repetitive, routine laboratory tasks, such as decapping sample tubes, loading and unloading analytical instruments*, reading barcodes and verifying fill levels and cap colours, and transporting samples between rooms, freeing staff to focus on the work that requires their expertise and professional judgement.

Addressing a Nordic-wide workforce shortage

Nordic laboratories face the same challenge as the rest of healthcare: fewer hands, and more samples. uLab Mobile is a mobile robot equipped with a collaborative robotic arm that moves autonomously through laboratory facilities and can be integrated with infrastructure such as automated doors and elevators. Workflows are configured without programming, and the robot automatically prioritises urgent samples ahead of routine ones.

Integrating with existing laboratory equipment

Through the uGo+ software platform, uLab Mobile can be integrated into laboratory workflows, including LIS connectivity where required, as well as supported analytical instruments* and laboratory infrastructure.

Quote

“The demand for laboratory testing will keep growing, but the supply of qualified staff will not. We believe flexible automation is an important part of the solution. uLab Mobile can reduce the workload of monotonous, repetitive tasks, so that biomedical scientists get more time for the work that requires their expertise.”

Robert Lindesjö, Managing Director, Vingmed AB

“Laboratory automation should adapt to the laboratory, not the other way around. With uLab Mobile, laboratories can automate workflows step by step while continuing to use their existing instruments and infrastructure. Together with Vingmed, we are combining flexible robotics with strong local laboratory expertise, service and support to make this new generation of automation accessible across the Nordics.”

Kerstin Wagner, Co-CEO, United Robotics Group

Human oversight remains with laboratory staff

uLab Mobile executes defined laboratory workflows; it does not make clinical diagnostic decisions. Laboratory staff remain in control of workflow configuration and can intervene when required.

uLab to be demonstrated in September

uLab Mobile will be shown publicly for the first time at the Vingmed booth during the Nordic Congress in Clinical Biochemistry in Aarhus, Denmark, 15–18 September, and at our booth at Linusdagarna in Upplands Väsby, Sweden, 15–17 September. Live footage from both booths will be available via locally distributed QR codes.

*Instruments with integration-ready support. Full specifications and the current list of supported instruments are available at vingmed.se.
