Rhino berättar historien om LA på sextiotalet
I Los Angeles under mitten av sextiotalet var musiken allestädes närvarande - från garagen i Orange County, från de sunkiga lägenheterna i San Fernando Valley, till Laurel Canyons bungalower. Utan tvivel låg dock musikscenens epicentra på Sunset Strip, där "freaks" fyllde rockklubbarna som kantade Hollywoods berömda genomfartsled. Rhino för Nuggets-historien vidare när de släpper ett fyra-skivors boxset som innehåller allt man behöver från den rika musikhistorien. WHERE THE ACTION IS! Andrew Sandoval, en av boxens producenter, förklarar konceptet i konvoluttexten: "...the Nuggets series is something of the alternative musical history of the 1960s. Not so much a survey of what happened, but more what could have happened had music charted on merit alone."
WHERE THE ACTION IS! innehåller 101 låtar som spänner över en mängd av stadens starkast lysande stjärnor (The Byrds, Love, The Doors, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, Captain Beefheart, The Mamas & The Papas, Lowell George, Iron Butterfly, The Monkees) och som samtidigt belyser talangfulla artister vars stjärnglans ledsamt nog flög under radarn (The Seeds, The Electric Prunes, Modern Folk Quintet, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Spirit, The Everpresent Fullness, Kaleidoscope, The Standells, The Bobby Fuller Four).
De fyra skivorna är arrangerade tematiskt för att täcka de olika aspekterna av popens, rockens, klubbens och Top 40-eran. Den första täcker några av de mer namnkunniga band som uppträdde på klubbarna på Hollywoods Sunset Strip. Skiva två innehåller en sampling av de musiker som startade upp i södra L.A, östra L.A och så fjärran förorter som Riverside och Bakersfield. Tredje skivan djupdyker in i artisteriet hos LA's producenter, arrangörer och studiomusikernas Wrecking Crew. Den fjärde och sista skivan tar oss från den gryende folkrockscenen till den nyfödda canyon-rocken, countryrocken och den fullt utvecklade psychedelian i regionen. Den visar också hur rockpionjärer så som Del Shannon och Rick Nelson slog sina egna slag för att passa in bland "kidsen".
Bland de många höjdpunkterna finns en alternativ tagning av Beach Boys "Heroes And Villains", Warren Zevon och producenten Bones Howe framför "(You Used To) Ride So High" som The Motorcycle Abeline, "Take A Giant Step" av The Rising Sons, "Acid Head" av The Velvet Illusions," lokala talangen Kim Fowleys "Underground Lady," Jan & Deans "Fan Tan," The Monkees "Daily Nightly," Jesse Lee Kincaids "She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune," "Come To The Sunshine" av Van Dyke Parks, "Sister Marie" av Nilsson, och "Hippy Elevator Operator" av The W.C. Fields Memorial Electric String Band.
Boxen innehåller även tre hittills outgivna låtar: en alldeles nyligen funnen demoversion av "Sit Down I Think I Love You," inspelad av Stephen Stills och Richie Furay strax innan de bildade Buffalo Springfield; en demo av "Words" av Tommy Boyce och Bobby Hart, en av västkustens mest framgångsrika kompositörsteam; och "Once Upon A Time," ett samarbete mellan Tim Buckley och textförfattaren Larry Beckett.
I en vacker förpackning som "coffee table book" samlas i San Fransisco Nuggets en mängd av matnyttig information om Los Angeles musikscen, inkluderat opublicerade foton, nya kommentarer från flera av artisterna, en lista över klubbarna och vilka som uppträdde var, en essä om LA:s radiostationer som satte prägel på eran, samt en låt-för-låt-beskrivning med detaljerad sessionsinformation om varje låt.
