How Do You Make Data Journalism and Visualization Work Harder in Telling Your Stories?

Data journalism is here to stay and data visualization is evolving. 2015 is the year when we move beyond data visualization. So far, decision makers have focused too much on the aesthetics of data and not enough on the information it yields. The key challenge is really about making sure your readers can understand the depth of what you report. Datasets are getting larger, but ploughing through this data to create sophisticated news pieces is becoming more manageable with new software and technologies.

The Afghan War Diary is a collection of internal Military logs released by WikiLeaks in 2010. It brought the top news agencies in Journalism together to report on the more than 91,000 documents leaked and presenting them in a way that would engage their readers.News agencies were given a raw Excel sheet with over 90,000 incorrectly formatted rows of data, and had to create a method for analyzing, summarizing and curating the data in a way to develop the story for their audience.

In 2009, The Guardian launched their Datablog, which gave a great breakdown of managing data journalism. The New York Times and Google have also been lauded for creating interactive visualizations to help present information in an invigorating way. How about in the event of a crisis or emergency? How can you better manage the big data sets and then efficiently produce interactive visualizations and data journalism when the news is breaking?

At Digital Journalism World 2015, our speakers will give you their insights into making data journalism work for you.

Find out how to use raw data to magnificent visualizations for your news audience when news is breaking. Understand the software you can use to turn data into stories, effective data visualization strategies you can incorporate into your newsroom, and how you can use data to make stories personal to your readers.

Martin Stabe, the Head of Interactive News at the Financial Times, will discuss the role of interactivity and data journalism. “Interactivity, meanwhile, allows us to tell complex stories by guiding readers through the many ways of viewing the large data sets that increasingly form the basis of important journalism.” At the Digital Journalism World summit this May, he will talk about data visualization strategies that can help the newsroom, along with team development and case-study visualizations on the elections coverage by the Financial Times.
