Packing for an adventure - in under 20 minutes

On 17 and 18 Oct, in conjunction with the launch of the Muji To Go collection, Edits Inc conducted 5 workshops in total for Muji's customers, fans and employees.  Over 110 people attended these sessions, and many more stood by to listen in while shopping at the store.

We were overwhelmed by questions from the participants, particularly about the travel cases for clothing and shoes, as well as the "Samurai fold".  It was like the floodgates of understanding were opened and people finally understood why packing luggages had been such a chore for them.

Most (if not all) websites and advice out there is focused on squeezing the maximum amount of "schtuff" inside a luggage.  However, they all neglected the single most fundamental principle, that is, having more time is way more important than having more luggage space.

Yes - you heard us right.  Why?  Because a foldable (large) tote can easily solve the luggage space problem, but time, it defies to be contained.

Travelling is about spending time to take in the sights, experience the culture, taste the food, communion with friends AND shop-till-you-drop.  Time spent packing/ unpacking/ repacking luggage is time taken away from all these activities (unless you have a butler, that is).

While our luggages should help us navigate all the activities we've planned with ease, it should also be quick and easy enough to pack.  If not, packing your luggage will soon morph into a chore instead of being a small sliver of an enjoyable journey.  And if you're on a 10 day tour of 4 Italian cities - well, that's 4 times the pain!  Yikes!

So here are some time goals for luggages.  Anything more, and you should ask yourself why.

  1. Time taken to pack: 20 minutes
  2. Time taken to unpack at the hotel:  < 5 minutes
  3. Time taken to repack before leaving the hotel:  < 10 minutes
  4. Time taken to unpack once you're home:  < 5 minutes
The ultimate goal?  Never leave anything behind, at home or at a foreign hotel, ever again, regardless of how hurriedly you left
