How to Build Green

When you build green, you take sustainable housing to the next level. Owners and residents get comfortable homes that cost less to operate, last longer and keep its occupants healthy. And of course, the environment will benefit as buildings become more efficient and use less resources.

Energy-efficient features

Green homes use efficient lighting fixtures and bulbs. Renewable energy sources, like photovoltaic electricity and water heating further decrease the overall energy consumption. Revolutionary new exterior coating systems are now available to help reflect the sun's heat rays, thereby improving indoor air temperature.

Water-efficient features

Fixtures and appliances such as low-flow showerheads, faucets and toiletse, and water efficient dishwashers and washing machines all conserve water. Programmed, low-volumeirrigation systems, rainwater collection systems, wastewater treatment systems and hot water recirculation systems also save water.

Resource-efficient features

Orientation and design for a green home should take advantage of natural daylight to reduce lighting needs during the day. It should contain renewable materials, including rapidly-renewable wood species such as bamboo and recycled-content materials in carpets, tiles and concrete formulations.

Indoor air quality features

The heating, air conditioning and ventilation system must be appropriately sized for an efficient and properly ventilated green home. Ventilation fans in the kitchen and bathrooms should circulate fresh air. Low VOC and Formaldehyde free paints as well as finishes should be used.

Outside the home

Vine-covered green screens, large canopy trees and other landscaping should shade exterior walls, the driveway, patios and other "hardscapes" to minimize heat islands. Yards should be landscaped with drought-tolerant plants. Low VOC exterior paints should be chosen as it reduces environmental impact, while high Solar Reflectance Index exterior products are advisable to reduce the heat island effect.
