More MBA choices

Potential postgraduate candidates have three new programmes offered by British universities to choose from at the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS).

Bangor University is offering the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in International Marketing and MBA in Banking and Finance, and Northumbria University is offering the Master of Science in Health Sciences (Management).

Business Focus

Professor John Thorntorn, head of Bangor Business School at Bangor University believes in motivating “thinking scholars” who can put theoretical knowledge into practice.

“We encourage them to think independently and critically, and to seek to establish strong links between what is taught in the classroom and real life so that they can reconcile theory with practical real-world concerns,” he says.

The university’s MBA in International Marketing, which can be completed full-time in 12 months and part-time in 18 months, is designed for graduates to start or develop careers in marketing. It explores the principles, theoretical concepts and practices of marketing within the context of business and management. It will also focus on developing academic and applied skills in marketing, including advertising, brand management and loyalty, customer service, public relations and market research.

Its MBA in Banking and Finance, which can be completed full-time in 12 months and part-time in 18 months, provides coherent analytical framework for the study of banking and financial developments from a management perspective. The emphasis throughout the programme is on the application of contemporary, financial, managerial and strategic developments that affect real-world decision-making in the global financial industry.

Knowledge gain

Students who pursue the Master of Science in Health Sciences (Management) gain invaluable transferable skills including the development of critical appraisal., communication and decision-making skills, says Ms Lesley Geddes, programme lead, department of public health and well being, health and life sciences, Northumbria University.

“Graduates have gone to work in, or gain promotion within, hospital management, marketing, patient care and nursing administration, as well as public health interventions, project management, and corporate planning and development. Others have also undertaken research studies leading to PhD,” she says.

Available full-time and part-time, and to be completed within 12 months and 20 months respectively, the MSc Health Sciences (Management) is designed for health practitioners and those working in health-care organisations to focus on practices, policies and drivers in relation to their impact on the regional and global health-care landscape. The programme will facilitate individuals to consider the implications of their learning, reading and enquiry for policy and practice in their own area of interest.

It aims to establish conditions and standards for rigorous critical enquiry and to extend the criteria for judging assumptions underlying policy and practice in the health management field. It will enable students to develop an increasing respect for evidence and discourse, and the capacity to initiate and sustain change., both in their own practice and more generally within their professional context.
