Digital fashion exhibition by LASALLE College of the Arts offers escape from the chaos of reality

As 2020 draws to a close, 76 students from LASALLE College of the Arts’ BA(Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles programme and BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries programme have come together to create a digital exhibition reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of fashion. Titled Phantasm, the exhibition runs online from 14 December 2020, 7:00pm.

Through critical analysis of the role and relevance of fashion in this disrupted COVID-19 environment, students created and curated a selection of garments and accessories. These respond to the sense of isolation, transformations and loss of identity in the fashion industry that the pandemic has brought about.

In conjunction with Phantasm, LASALLE’s School of Fashion will also launch a new research website, www.1mcnallyfashion.com, on 14 December. This publicly-accessible central repository of fashion research will house not only output from LASALLE’s fashion students and staff, but also future collaborations with partner universities. Through the new repository, LASALLE aims to engage in conversation with visionaries of today to better understand the codes, meaning and values associated with fashion.

This conversation is already beginning with Phantasm, which features works by 12 invited creatives from Southeast Asia in addition to LASALLE students. They include durational artist Melati Suryodarmo, who is known for her physically demanding performances, and Hafiiz Karim, a social media sensation beloved for his transportation of classical Western figures into modern Singaporean contexts. A series of Instagram filters, created by BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries students, as well as short fashion films and visual imagery also act as other entry points for audiences to interact with the exhibition.
