[McAfee/Intel Security] Survey reveals the future of technology in the workplace

Intel Security today released findings from a recent global survey, conducted by MSI Research, of working professionals around the world exploring how they work, where they work, and their attitudes towards online privacy and data protection. 38 percent of companies expect to stop providing devices to workers by 2016, according to Gartner. This transformation is challenging IT organizations to embrace the consumerization of their workforce with a user experience-centric approach that includes security-minded Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives, and beyond.

As mobile penetration in Asia continues to see exponential growth, companies in our rapidly developing region can consequently expect inevitable consumerization of the workforce. Albeit a common worry, BYOD can in fact be more boon than bane, as long as clear and updated mobile device policy and endpoint security practices are implemented,” shared Alvin Tan, Country Manager for Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam, McAfee, Part of Intel Security.

From a security perspective this means that any risky behavior in which employees participate online, can also have negative repercussions for their employers. Furthermore, by using their own devices for work, employees put company data at risk if endpoints are not adequately secured.
The survey, conducted by MSI Research on behalf of Intel Security, revealed that:

  • More than three quarters of the respondents (78%) indicated that they use their personal devices for work-related activities
  • An even greater number (79%) stated that they conduct personal online activities on company-issued devices
  • 40% of employees work from home or “wherever”
  • 65% of respondents feel IT is responsible for protecting personal data on work device
  • 77% of respondents feel very confident or confident that their employer is taking necessary steps to protect all important data
  • 61% of activity at work is personal, confidential or private
