Europe’s leading university,  ETH Zurich, selects Mendeley Institutional Edition to empower their research programmes

Swets and Mendeley are proud to announce that the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology  (ETH)
in Zurich – under the aegis of the ETH library -  has acquired a three year license for the Mendeley Institutional Edition (MIE). Consistently ranked one of the top universities in continental Europe, ETH Zurich is at the forefront of the world’s research and education programmes in the fields of engineering and natural sciences. ETH Zurich's 16 departments offer Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programmes and now all of their students and research staff can benefit from the MIE Teams package, which offers a host of collaboration enabling features for end users, including unlimited shared library space in the cloud for research groups.

“We’ve boldly claimed that the Mendeley Institutional Edition sets new standards for research collaboration,” said David Main, CEO of Swets. “With ETH Zurich signing up for the service, those claims can now be considered facts. Renowned as one of the leading research institutions on the
planet the ETH Zurich attracts some of the world’s leading thinkers and innovators each year to its varied programmes. The MIE brings its own innovation, offering a unique tool to researchers, libraries and other faculty staff that, unlike alternative products, provides clear value to all parties.”

“Mendeley is all about making researcher’s lives easier, and MIE gives institutions great tools to do just that,” says Victor Henning, Co-Founder of Mendeley. “We have a great user base at ETH Zurich and are really happy to be bringing our Institutional Edition there too, which will give librarians better functionality to predict and meet the needs of researchers.”

“With over 1000 currently registered Mendeley users hailing from  the ETH Zurich, licensing the MIE made complete sense for us,” said Dr. Arlette Piguet at the ETH library. “Not only do we gain insight into the real-time scope and impact of our users’ research but the expanded library space and group features that come with the Teams plan can only help to stimulate users’ productivity and improve the value of their research.”

The Mendeley Institutional Edition powered by Swets is an analytics tool, built on top of Mendeley’s free end-user research platform, that helps librarians and other administrators to understand the research activity of their community and to facilitate collaboration within it. It combines the knowledge, guidance and expertise of the library with Mendeley’s powerful reference management and social collaboration tools. The result is a unique and powerful online environment that will support the future of academic research.

Institutions looking to improve the research productivity at their institution can find out more by visiting www.swets.com/mendeley. There they can request a demonstration, view a quick video introduction to the platform and find other information on the Mendeley Institutional Edition.

About ETH Zurich (source: http://www.ethz.ch/about/index_EN)

ETH Zurich is one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences. It
is well-known for its excellent education, ground-breaking fundamental research and for putting its new findings directly into practice. It offers researchers an inspiring working environment and its students a comprehensive education.

Founded in 1855, ETH Zurich today has some 18,000 students from over 100 different countries, 3,800 of whom are doctoral students. About 500 professors currently teach and conduct research in the areas of engineering, architecture, mathematics, natural sciences, system-oriented sciences, and management and social sciences.

ETH Zurich regularly appears at the top of international rankings as one of the best universities in the world. 21 Nobel Laureates have studied, taught or conducted research at ETH Zurich, underlining the excellent reputation of the institute.

Transferring its knowledge to the private sector and society at large is one of ETH Zurich’s primary
concerns. It does this very successfully, as borne out by the 80 new patent applications each year and some 260 spin-off companies that emerged from the institute between 1996 and 2012.

ETH Zurich helps to find long-term solutions to global challenges. The focal points of its research
include energy supply, risk management, developing the cities of the future, global food security and human health.
