PATRIZIA and Smartvatten Team Up in the Netherlands to Monitor Water Usage

Water efficiency specialist Smartvatten and global investment manager PATRIZIA have kicked off their pilot for monitoring water usage at five of the company’s properties in the Netherlands. PATRIZIA now has access to real-time data on water consumption and potential leaks at both its Dutch office and residential buildings, which will help them to take their next steps on the road to a sustainable future.

PATRIZIA is a leading partner for pan-European real estate investments and their commitment to building communities and sustainable futures is an integral part of the company’s operations. “Sustainability is a central part of PATRIZIA’s long-term strategy. It is embedded in our company’s values, culture, and business approach. Measuring our impact is key to setting our targets,” says Zaïda Thépass, ESG Manager at PATRIZIA.

Smartvatten shares this commitment to a sustainable future. Founded in 2013, the company facilitates remote monitoring of water consumption in properties across Europe by combining a simple device with smart software. Smartvatten offers its full-service water efficiency expertise worldwide, with a view to raising awareness and contributing to the sustainable use of water around the globe.

Pilot in Amsterdam and The Hague

In 2021, PATRIZIA and Smartvatten agreed to launch a pilot to monitor and analyze water consumption at five properties: the Antonian, Bloomhouse and FOZ office buildings in Amsterdam, the Oranjekwartier residential property in Amsterdam, and the Langs de Ley residential property in The Hague.

PATRIZIA and Smartvatten are now looking to expand the number of buildings monitored. Like many real estate managers in the Netherlands, PATRIZIA is currently working on solutions to generate real-time data from residential properties where they do not have any insight into water consumption, as these are monitored by the tenants and not the landlord.

The company now aims to extend their water efficiency strategy across all other asset classes. “Since the introduction of Smartvatten, we have seen a significant reduction in water consumption in some of our assets. In addition to the efficiency impact, we also managed to track down a cannabis plantation by using Smartvatten after recording abnormally high water usage,” says Guido Maarsman, Technical Asset Manager at PATRIZIA.

Pan-European Partnership

“At Smartvatten, we’re particularly proud of our partnership with PATRIZIA,” says Tim Twisk, Global Key Account Manager at Smartvatten. “By implementing our solution in multiple asset classes during the pilot phase, PATRIZIA was able to formulate its vision for a widely endorsed water efficiency strategy. We aim to build on PATRIZIA’s vision in our cross-border approach to our pan-European rollout.”
