Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Xpand 3D Explore First Demonstration Compatibility Among 3D Displays and 3D Active Shutter Glasses

At CES 2012, Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sony Corporation and X6D Limited (XPAND 3D) are exploring the first demonstration of compatibility among 3D displays and 3D active shutter glasses supporting the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative standard.

The Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative licenses RF (Bluetooth®) and IR based communication protocols between consumer 3D active shutter glasses and 3D displays such as televisions, projectors and 3D theaters with XPAND active shutter technology.

The Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative license also includes multiple types of infrared (IR) system protocols between 3D active shutter glasses and 3D displays, ranging from the protocols jointly developed by Panasonic and XPAND 3D*, to the proprietary protocols of Samsung and Sony, respectively.

The Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative brings together the world's leading 3D TV manufacturers and 3D technology providers for the benefit of consumers. Glasses utilizing 3D active shutter technology benefits consumers in that they enable Full HD 3D picture quality to be displayed to each eye, depending on the 3D displays.

There are two types of licenses: one for TV/Projector/Emitter and one for 3D eyewear. Each license has three licensed technologies and several product categories to choose from. The license program includes verification procedure for licensee products before the product is sold in the market. The verification program ensures the compliant products work seamlessly with other compliant products consumers own.

It was recently announced that the Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative has received the 2012 3D Technology Award from the International 3D Society for the FHD3DGI Standard. For more information, please visit http://www.international3dsociety.com/International_3D_Society/AWARDS_TECHNOLOGY_2A.html

The four companies' demo is on display at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall Lower Level, XPAND Booth #20231 on January 10 and 11th, 2012.

*The protocols jointly developed by Panasonic and XPAND: They were announced in March 2011 and supported by eight participant companies: Changhong Electric Co., Ltd., FUNAI Electric Co., Ltd., Hisense Electric Co., Ltd., Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Seiko Epson Corporation, SIM2 Multimedia S.p.A. and ViewSonic Corporation.
