Stena Recycling is divesting its German refrigerator recycling business to Quantum Capital Partners to focus on battery recycling operations. CEO Kristofer Sundsgård emphasizes Germany's importance for growth due to its automotive sector, planning significant battery recycling expansion in the future.
Stena is now taking the next step in shipping electrification: the development of a new type of energy storage, similar to very large powerbanks, which will be essential for the quick charging of electric ferries in the future. The project is part-financed by the EU and will, among other things, investigate how used batteries from the transport sector can be reused for energy storage in ports.
The commercial service lives of bus batteries are significantly extended and natural resources are conserved. That is the result of a new cooperation between Volvo Buses and Stena Recycling subsidiary Batteryloop. After the batteries are removed from Volvo's buses, they are reused as energy storage units for a number of years, for instance in buildings and charging stations.
