International Stars and Acclaimed Swedish Artists at The Contemporary Art Sale

Celebrated, challenging, moving – and often provocative.
The Contemporary Art Sale brings together the most relevant contemporary art of our time, serving as a melting pot for international stars, leading Swedish names – and a driven young generation poised to conquer the art scene of tomorrow.

“Stockholms Auktionsverk is looking ahead, and contemporary art is a vital cornerstone that reflects our times while creating values that point toward the future. We are proud to present a broad and diverse auction where today’s international greats and established Swedish artists are shown alongside works by a younger generation – many of them appearing at auction for the first time but with the potential to become the stars of tomorrow,” says Johanna Lindholm Malm, Specialist in Swedish and International Contemporary Art at Stockholms Auktionsverk.

Among the international highlights of The Contemporary Art Sale is The Running Fence, a fascinating work by Christo & Jeanne-Claude based on their spectacular 1976 installation in the Californian landscape. Although the installation has long since been dismantled, the preparatory sketches live on – and this sale offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of these highly sought-after works. Equally striking is Frank Stella’s exploration of imaginary worlds in Fanattia, as well as Bjarne Melgaard’s untitled sculpture, which with its unapologetically provocative energy is certain to spark conversation.

Sweden’s most renowned contemporary artists also have a natural place in the auction – alongside the names of the future. The ever-relevant Marie-Louise Ekman is one of the central figures, represented by A Monument-Home, a Picasso-Lady and an Olle Bærtling-Painting, previously exhibited at Moderna Museet. The auction further includes works by beloved artists such as Ola Billgren, Barbro Östlihn, Ernst Billgren, and Linn Fernström.

Among the younger generation, Ludvig Helin stands out with his monumental painting Macroscopic Scale. Other highlights include Hanna Hansdotter’s striking glass sculpture and Moa Gustafsson Söndergaard’s textile work Flow Studies III.

The preview of The Contemporary Art Sale opens on October 1 at Stockholms Auktionsverk on Nybrogatan 32 in Stockholm and runs until the live auction on October 14.
