Newly Discovered Old Master Painting Sparks Bidding War and Record Price at The Exclusive Collection

The newly discovered painting The Flagellation of Christ by Baroque master Jusepe de Ribera sparked intense bidding during The Exclusive Collection at Stockholms Auktionsverk on Thursday evening. The sensational work attracted international interest and ultimately sold for SEK 5 million – setting a new Scandinavian record for a Ribera.

ForThe Exclusive Collection, Stockholms Auktionsverk's specialists handpicked the most exceptional works of the spring season. Among the top highlights was the newly discovered Old Master painting The Flagellation of Christ by the renowned Baroque artist Jusepe de Ribera.

Previously part of the Gösta Stenman collection, the highly regarded painting had long been misattributed to another artist. However, following in-depth research and a thorough attribution process conducted by Professor Nicola Spinosa and French Old Master expert Stéphane Pinta of Cabinet Turquin, the painting’s true creator was confirmed.

The strong international interest in the masterpiece led to an intense bidding war, and it was sold at SEK 5 million – a new record for a Ribera painting in Scandinavia.

“It is truly remarkable to see such an exclusive and art-historically significant work receive the recognition it deserves and generate international competition at an auction in Sweden. I am pleased to see this early work by Jusepe de Ribera take its rightful place in art history,” said Victoria Svederberg, Head of the Fine Art Department at Stockholms Auktionsverk.

Tomorrow, Friday 23 May, marks the next major auction at Stockholms Auktionsverk. The Watches & Jewellery Collection will begin at 3:00 PM at Nybrogatan 32.
