21 Talented Young Designers

Interior design fair Formex held August 23-26 2017, welcomes 21 bright talents to the area Young Designers, a platform for young, up-and-coming designers. The contrast between form and material, cultural encounters, and the tools of the craft all act as sources of inspiration for some of the designers who will be exhibiting at this fall’s edition.

Mia Sahlberg started her career as a fashion designer, stylist and artist but found her true calling in silversmithing. She studied fashion design and pattern-making at the Cutter’s Academy in Gothenburg. During a photo shoot in Paris where she worked as a stylist, she created accessories and so embarked on her path to silversmithing.

“I make jewelry where the raw and unpolished play against Scandinavian minimalism. I love to see something grow from an idea into a defined shape. The most fun thing for me is going from one tool to another one, and letting my inspiration flow freely between them. At Formex in Stockholm I’m showing my new collection of silver jewelry.”

SLOYDLAB
SLOYDLAB was founded by Matilda Hunyadi, who studied industrial design at the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design. The furniture is produced in collaboration with cabinetmaking collective CAJ, representing Carl Molin, Anton Möllefors and Joel Åkerblom, all three of whom studied at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies.

“At Formex we’re exhibiting our very first collection, Sweep Me, made with traditional wood-bending techniques. Our furniture has an extraordinary level of craftsmanship. We love it when fantastic colors and arched curves come together with rough material like pine. We often have more neutral alternatives in our collection, but we try to achieve furniture pieces that are a bit more daring.”

Moaré
Ladan Alipour, Camila Galdamez Garcia and Petra Landfors together form Moiré, design inspired by three different cultures, styles and experiences that together create something new. With their background in packaging design, all draw inspiration from craft traditions originating in different parts of the world. They are exhibiting their latest collection at Formex in Stockholm, a collection of washable paper – waxed paper that can withstand moisture.

“We’re inspired by different cultures yet we try to bring a modern interpretation that often uses paper and packaging techniques. Sustainability, both environmental and social, is something we actively work with in our designs. Each piece in our collection is unique because we color them using natural dyes.”

Young Designers accepts applications from designers whose products are not yet in production with an established company. In each area, the same designer can exhibit three times but must have new products to show. Next to Young Designers is Next Step, which is dedicated to exhibitors who have progressed a bit further in their establishment phase. Young Designers is being held for the 19th time and Next Step for the 15th time.
