Danish functional arts and crafts tradition meets Italian conceptual approach at GamFratesi – Guest of Honour 2014

For the eleventh year running, Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair is inviting a highly acclaimed international designer or design studio to create a lounge in Stockholmsmässan’s entrance hall. This time the task has fallen to Danish-Italian GamFratesi, a design studio enjoying a meteoric career and now in demand all over the world.

-  “We’re in awe of the way GamFratesi draws on its different cultural backgrounds to create a unique style all on its own. Equally impressive is the way the studio has delivered on the promise it showed when it was one of our Greenhouse exhibitors in 2006, to be one of the most talked-about design studios right now. It’s also especially thrilling that this will be the first time we’re inviting Nordic-based designers to be Guest of Honour,” says Cecilia Nyberg, Event Manager for Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair.

GamFratesi Design Studio was established in 2006, and consists of Stine Gam, born in Denmark in 1975, and Enrico Fratesi, born in 1978 in Italy. Stine Gam has a Master’s Degree in Furniture Design from the Aarhus School of Architecture. Enrico Fratesi studied architecture at the University of Florence and has a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design from the University of Ferrara.

- “In all the years we’ve been visiting Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, we’ve seen designers whose work we admire chosen as Guest of Honour to create this lounge. Needless to say, we feel greatly honored that the choice has fallen on us this time.

We wish to create a display where the space is divided in a surprising way allowing visitors to find intimate spaces to work, to meet or simply rest,” explain Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi.

GamFratesi embodies the fusion of Danish and Italian design. The Danish design tradition of attention to detail and minimalism is blended with quirkiness and the desire to tell a story. Contrasts frequently act as the key to GamFratesi’s inspiration, with their design flowing from everyday situations in their native cultures, and an authentic fusion of technology, poetry and tradition.

While the design studio is based in Copenhagen, the designers travel constantly between Italy and Denmark as they research and work on new projects. GamFratesi is a regular exhibitor at international shows, including Milan, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Cologne, New York, Shanghai, London and Berlin. GamFratesi collaborates with numerous international companies including Swedese, Ligne Roset, Gubi, Fontana Arte, Lightyears, Fredericia, Casamania, Galerie Maria Wettergren and One Nordic.

Previous Guests of Honour have been: Inga Sempé, Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Naoto Fukasawa, Konstantin Grcic, Giulio Cappellini, Ineke Hans, Paul Smith, Arik Levy and Oki Sato/Nendo.
