Diversity and awareness in Greenhouse

Designers and design schools from all over the world are invited to apply to Greenhouse, Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair’s area for unestablished designers. The jury has now selected the exhibitors for 2019,which include Kajsa Melchior Eriksson, Begüm Cana Özgür and Nikolaj Thrane Carlsen. In total, 37 designers/design groups and 29 design schools from 20 countries will participate. There are more international design schools than ever before. New for this Greenhouse is the award Best Performance - Selected by the Greenhouse Jury, which will be handed out in cooperation with Volvo Studio.

Kajsa Melchior Eriksson is studying her last year of the Master’s program at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She has a degree from the School of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg and has been working at Wingårdhs architect firm for four years.

“I am looking forward to talking to other young designers and seeing their entries as well as discussing my work with industry colleagues and curious visitors. In Greenhouse I will exhibit several sculptures I formed out of sand. I view my sculptures as a hybrid between furniture and form and would like to raise an interest in nature and its processes while also questioning our view on form and function.”

Begüm Cana Özgür is a designer from Turkey with a background in interior architecture. She started her studio in Istanbul in 2014.

“It is exciting to have the opportunity to share my work with a new audience and meet the Scandinavian design industry. I will exhibit works that interpret the local craftsmanship traditions in Turkey – in modern design, a partition wall and textile design developed to integrate more women into the production process. The products are made by local women from Harran and female refugees from Syria living in Harran’s refugee camp. The works highlight the role of design in social transformations.”

Nikolaj Thrane Carlsen is from Copenhagen. He graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in November 2017. Through his company TangForm, he would like to help create the sustainable furniture of the future.

“It is an honor for me to have received this opportunity to exhibit in Stockholm. I look forward to exhibiting my sustainable furniture together with other designers. My expectations are to create relationships, be inspired and learn more about environmentally friendly materials and products. I hope to meet producers who might be interested in my work. I am exhibiting an armchair with a seat made from a seaweed-based composite that is completely biodegradable. The furniture helps brings seaweed to the forefront as a key sustainable production input that preserves both aesthetics and quality. My focus is on a circular economy.”

Best Performance – Selected by the Greenhouse Jury

Starting in 2019, the award Best Performance – Selected by the Greenhouse Jury will be handed out in cooperation with Volvo Studio. The winner will receive EUR 5,000, and the award ceremony will be held February 5 on the Greenhouse stage.

The jury for Greenhouse 2019 consists of Anya Sebton, designer; Jens Fager, designer; John Löfgren, designer; and Monica von Schmalensee, architect.
