Mathematical games in Young Design Café

Mathematical games in Young Design Café

Simon Key Bertman has been commissioned to design this fall’s Young Design Café at Formex. For the sixth successive time, a young Swedish designer will be responsible for creating Young Design Café, which also includes the Young Designers zone and a stage area.

Simon Key Bertman, born in 1982, graduated from the textiles program at Konstfack in 2010. Since then he has participated in several exhibitions. His rugs have been displayed at Märta Måås Fjätterström in Båstad, Clarion, Hotel Birger Jarl and Hotel Scandic Malmen, among other locations. He is represented in London, Brighton and Båstad.

With the Formex Young Design Café he is creating an environment inspired by the possibilities and choices offered by a 6-sided dice (tärning in Swedish), hence the name - T6. This can be seen in the pattern on the exhibition floor rugs and in the lighting, with bicycle wheel fittings positioned according to a throw of the dice. The same principle applies to the square limestone tables, where the limestone slabs have holes for spices depending on the results from the dice. And the choice of spice is also dependent on how the dice lands.

Young Design Café also features a sofa from Lammhults in 6 different modules with furnishing fabric from Väveriet, using 6 patterns created by Simon Key Bertman and inspired by the shapes and dimensions of the sofa.

“I have always been inspired by dice, codes, games and mathematical systems. At Formex I have now been given the chance to show the infinite possibilities of dice… All the patterns are in some way inspired by all the variations offered by a dice,” says Simon Key Bertman.

Other designers who have designed Young Design Café (formerly called Young Design Lounge) on previous occasions include Sebastian Kjersén, My Little Drama, Lisa Bengtsson, Jarl Ferneus and Fuldesign, and Karin Robling.
