New railroad event paves the way for deals worth billions

During the period 2022–2033, the Swedish government has decided to invest SEK 165 billion in the operation and maintenance of the existing Swedish rail network and another SEK 437 billion in new railroads and roads. This initiative has a total budget of SEK 881 billion.

The planned railroad investments in the National Infrastructure Plan 2022–2033 are very extensive, with major investments in the Swedish rail network. Parts of these are on sections of the high-speed Stockholm-Malmö and Stockholm-Gothenburg lines that will be completed around 2045, according to the Swedish Government. The budget is SEK 799 billion, plus SEK 82 billion from congestion charges, track access charges and co-financing.

“These major railroad investments create a great need for a good meeting place created by and for the rail industry. This is what makes Train & Rail in Stockholm such an important initiative,” says Lars Redtzer, Head of Industry Development at the Swedish Construction Federation.

“We’re working to ensure a well-functioning society with good infrastructure. The development of the Swedish railroad is important for our members, and together with the industry we want to find a good way forward,” says Lars Redtzer.

A new meeting arena with a trade fair and conferences at Stockholmsmässan creates a golden opportunity for discussions and deals between different parties.

“Train & Rail in April 2023 could hardly come at a better time and gives all parties involved the chance for networking and finding new ways to collaborate,” says Monika Johannesen, Event Manager for Train & Rail.

Accessibility is key to ensuring the railroad of the future will be viable and climate-smart.

“We’re coming together to create an important arena for how we will develop Sweden’s railroads, where we can also discuss challenges relating to sustainability, digitalization and skills supply,” says Gabriel Modéus, Secretary General of Swedtrain, who’s the initiator of Train & Rail alongside Stockholmsmässan.

“This is also why we in the industry are building a new meeting place – by the industry, with the industry and for the industry – with Train & Rail in Stockholm. We look forward to welcoming visitors from all over Sweden and the entire Nordic region,” concludes Gabriel Modéus.

FACTS
The planned investments in railroads include:

• East Coast Line. SEK 10 billion to build four railway tracks on Sweden’s East Coast Line between Uppsala and the county border with Stockholm. The Swedish Transport Administration has also recently earmarked SEK 2 billion for a tramway line in southern Uppsala.
• The Roslag Line. Continued expansion to double track.
• The South-East Link. SEK 3.9 billion for the new South-East Link.
• Coast-to-Coast Line. Funds for expansion of double track Växjö-Räppe.
• Western Main Line. Capacity enhancement Laxå-Alingsås.
• Completely new trunk lines will be built. The plan includes the East Link stages Järna-Linköping, Gothenburg-Borås and Hässleholm-Lund, as well as planning for the remaining Linköping-Borås and Hässleholm via Jönköping stages.
• Brought-forward projects in Norrland. Several railway projects in northern Sweden will be brought forward, including the Dåva-Skellefteå expansion of the North Bothnia Line, and several objects such as extended passing stations at Murjek, Nattavaara, Harrträsk, Näsberg, Nourtikon and Sikträsk on the Iron Ore Line, while funds are being made available for entirely new projects on the Iron Ore Line.
• SEK 2.1 billion is being allocated for the annual operating contributions to the Inland Line during the plan period, which represents an increase of SEK 75 million per year during the period 2023–2026.
• However, the expansion of the new ERTMS traffic safety system, which is a prerequisite for digitization and increased capacity, has been drastically reduced.
• Improved power supply for the railroads and a national train management system are being completed and various measures for services involving longer freight trains are being implemented on the routes Hallsberg-Malmö and Hallsberg-Gothenburg.
