Stockholmsmässan welcomes 17,000 diabetes researchers

This week thousands of diabetes researchers are gathering in Stockholm to discuss the most recent achievements in the field. For Stockholmsmässan, it is a feather in its cap to once again host one of the world's largest medical congresses.

Delegates: 17,000; poster presentations: 1,200; lectures: 100; and exhibiting companies: 75. Several years of planning have gone into the European Association for the Study of Diabetes's (EASD) 51st Annual Meeting. Diabetes, which has affected 360 million people worldwide, is one of today's most endemic diseases, and the scientific program covers a broad area, including everything from genetics and epidemiology to clinical science, care and complications.

Stockholmsmässan has also been planning for the event for a long time. The first inquiry was raised five years ago, and the decision was made just over two years ago to hold the 2015 congress here. A large project team has been working since then to prepare everything down to the smallest detail. This is the third time that EASD has held its annual meeting in Stockholm. The last time was in 2010, and since then the congress has visited Lisbon, Berlin, Barcelona and Vienna before returning once again to “the capital of Scandinavia”.

“It reflects well on both Stockholm as a destination and Stockholmsmässan as a meeting facility that EASD has decided to come back so quickly. There are not a lot of cities that can offer meeting rooms and hotels for 18,000 people at the same time, but we can and we know that the organizers were very satisfied after the last meeting. Another important aspect is definitely that Sweden is one of the leading countries in terms of diabetes research,” says Stockholmsmässan CEO Patric Sjöberg.

Many people are most likely aware of Stockholmsmässan primarily because of all of the exhibitions that are held here every year, but conferences and meetings are also a big part of its operations.

“Most meetings that are held here are naturally much smaller than this giant congress, but many organizers look very closely at the facilities the large medical organizations are choosing since these organizations are known to be professional and have very high standards,” says Patric Sjöberg.
